"A funky little town near DC that literally hasn't changed since the 60's. Or if it has, the resemblance has gotten even closer. Since there's a major African American presence it has a somewhat Rastafarian ambiance. Check out the Glut Food Co-op (started by Marxists in 1969), the Eye Opener coffee shop (owned by a Deadhead) and the used furniture / alternative health stores. Possibly the cheapest place you can live between the mountains and the Chesapeake, if you're a hippie."

Comment: "Really dangerous"?! Whatever. It has crime, just like anywhere else in DC, but I feel really comfortable walking and biking at night in town. And expensive? Try Takoma Park. Mount Rainier is the best deal in DC, with a progressive community and a developing artists district.

Comment: I lived there for a summer and went to school in dc for 2 years. It is a cool little place but it is also really dangerous. The gangs in DC/MD are bountiful because this town is on the border with DC there are always gangs crossing the line to try and evade DC police. The Glut is great but in recent years the quality has really declined and i have gotten plenty of moldly stuff from there. This town is nestled between a dangerous section of DC and loud and roudy college park MD. It is not a place for a farm or for the slower hippie. Lots of partying to be had in College park but not necessarily with hippies and good luck finding cheap but good bud - in dc you are going to pay! Stick with the carolinas or floyd if you wanna be hippie in the south.
