Movie: The Boondock Saints Starring: William Dafoe, Sean Patrick Flannery, Norman Reedus, Billy Connelly & David Della Rocca Director: Troy Duffy Lion Gate Films, 1999. 97 min

“the choice between good and evil”
by: Anthony Howell

For a low rate movie that probably had little less than $40,000 invested in it, I have only two words to describe it, magnificently brilliant. This action/comedy film about two Irish brothers who mistakenly think they are blessed, after succeeding in a fight for their life with two nasty Russian mobsters. The movie’s setting is South Boston on St. Patrick’s Day, which is ironic because Boston is home to thousands of people from an Irish decent with Catholicism as their main religion. This comes into account later on in the film bringing up questions on the morality of life.

Sean Patrick Flannery and Norman Reedus play Murphy and Conner MacManus, and its truly believable roles that they inhabit. As the theme of the clumsy heroes has been used many times, never has a story of heroes, who by a series of coincidences win the day, been put together with so much originality and flair like in Boondock Saints. The movie opens with a scene in a church were everyone is saying the Lord’s prayer. Also praying is the two brothers. There is a narrator but you do not know whom until the end of the movie. “On I west my flashing sword, and my hand takes hold on judgement, I will take vengeance upon thy enemies and I will pay those who haze me. Oh Lord, raise me to thy right hand and count me among thy saints.”

The two brothers go around from day to day “cleaning up the streets” of evil men, low life’s, scum bags, mobsters, vigilante style. This movie employs a messed up time frame system, which jumps from day to day always leaving you guessing, but comes together in the end. You see the two brothers about to begin their vigilante spree then it fades, then opens again with the aftermath where the cops are on the scene mopping everything up and you find Paul Smecker (William Dafoe) narrating exactly what happened. Although this time cut scene is becoming overused in movies today, it is used to fantastic effect in this film, it brings the story extra layers and meanings it would not have had otherwise.

The MacManus brothers, Conner and Murphy, are portrayed in the film as if they were one person. References from characters in the movie, suggest that they are what they seem to be, angels. In times of danger, both brothers’ posses inhuman powers, which can also be proven to be real in times of danger. That is left for you to decide. Through their experiences they begin to believe who or what they really are and through the death of David Della Rocca, it only boosts their egos into doing what they do best, clean the city of all the evil men. Throughout the movie the brothers have a similar tattoo on their finger and hand. Murphy has a tattoo on his left hand and Conner has one on his right. Once again indicating their presence as one. The tattoo states, “VERITAS” and “AEQUITAS”, this is Latin for “truth” and “justice”, which is what these brothers are fighting for throughout the movie.

Paul Smecker (William Dafoe) is a good FBI agent, who reads everything to the letter of a crime scene while listening, to what I think is, Italian opera. He only gets better at every crime scene but starts to loose his cool when the MacManus brothers get even more successful. He begins to ask himself the question that is arising through these crimes of compassion. Are these boys right or wrong for what they are doing? Through his self search for some answers he stumbles upon a church late one night and comes to the realization that what these brothers are doing is correct. He is quoted to saying, “All the things he wishes he can do, these guys are doing it” Near the end of the film he comes to realize that he must join them because what they are doing is right.

The movie itself asks a morale question that is brought up everyday in society, who decides who punishes evil and to what extent. This question is never really answered but it is shown heavily on one side of the spectrum. Right before the trial in the end of the film of Papa Joe, a head mobster, there are two reporters talking, “He’s going to walk and there is nothing we can do. Even with all this evidence against him, he is going to walk. And there is nothing we can do about this.” Which is followed from what I believe is a quote from the bible spoken by the narrator; “Never shall innocent blood be shed yet the blood of the wicked shall flow like a river. The three shall spread their blackened wings and be the vengeance strike and hammer from God.”

Although there is a high level of violence and profanity, it never becomes annoying. There are moments in this film where I laughed, especially after hearing a 74-year-old bartender with turret syndrome talk. It is a really funny film, packed with a constant level of amused anger. It is a real surprise for such a small budget movie but with a witty and intelligent script and perfectly done performances, it is kind of hard to believe that so many people overlooked this movie. I liked this film and would suggest anyone (over the age of 18) to go and see it!

Comment: anyone got a problem with this well, i hate seeing born again christens saying crap, if you look at this, my point of view, before god made man, a war kicked of in heaven between god and the morning star, which was an angle, and reble (devil) anyway after the war god made man, and he also was a harsh person back then, god did not do his own deeds he recuited and angle names Lowke, which was named the angle of death. the flooding of earth, when noah saved the anmals lowke did that. basically what i am trying to say is. that in are time now. death for murder or rape or even stealing is not necessary. but if you look towards the cathloic church you will c that they dont condem it. as wat jesus said before he died, wat laws are passed on, on earth, so thay pass on in heaven, therefore god commend this, because the church commands it. its nothing to do with the morals but of justise for every man, p''s this movie rocks

Comment: first of all it was a callin from God these guys were posessed by something bigger, they both woke up from a sleep at the same time, this is not normal and by any means a dream, watch the movie again and youll see what im talkin about. just trying to state the facts

My Score:

Comment: ok first of all the church scene, i am guessing happens a year later. this is based on the way the little girl and the priest look and them. judging by the way they are treated in the meat packaging plant, they are well known for their good humor; so it would seem strange that people would look at them like that if they are generally well liked.

second, they ARE sent by god to begin serving justice. it only makes sense. they are religious people and the way the water is hitting them, it is obviously what the director is trying to portray.

it also (in a small way) explains there luck with their missions even when they are about to take a nasty turn, god''s grace comes in. their fate may even have been predetermined judging by the way their father is also a hitman of sorts and the content of the family prayer.

i had no idea the movie was so low budget. it was extremely well made. the director did a wonderful job. it wouldn''t be as good if everything was explained, otherwise everyone wouldn''t have misconceptions.

Comment: This movie rocks! The person that said on here that the brothers didn''t get a sign from god to kill the evil in this world I think is stupid. I am a very stong catholic and I think that they did get a sign from god in the jail and that they did as he said. If it wasn''t from god then what is up with the prayer they say as they take out a eveil one. Sometimes I catch my self thinking that we need people like the saint brothers in thw world we live in.I can''t wait for all saints day.

Comment: Also, they''re not hearing the priest because that sermon happened much later than them being in Prison (time-line and whatnot) also, a point of the movie is not so much that they ARE hearing God tell them to do these things as much as they THINK god is telling them to do it. They are not hearing the priest because that sermon hadn''t happened at the time they were in prison, but even if they were (which they''re not) it is still pretty amazing that two brothers hear the same thing in their dream at exactly the same time, no?

My Score:

Comment: Okay, a LOT of people miss out on a VERY important aprt of the movie, namely (like most of the other movie) the beginning is NOT the beginnig. Actually, the "beginning" during the sermon is actually much later in the time frame. (as is evident by their dress from late in the movie vs their dress in the beginning) and also because as they go up to the crucifix, one priest gets up to stop them, but the other priest stops the first priest because the other priest knows or at least thinks these two are "the saints" whereas before the incident with the russian mafia guys, they had never done anything like that (which is why it got so much media attention AND why the name "the saints" never got bandied about until later in the film. Also, you can see they are armed under their coats in the sermon scene, but in the scenes after that and before the russian mafia guys get killed they have no weapons of any kind) so watch the movie again with the thought that the sermon scene (like most of the movie) is NOT in the correct order, but actually from much later in the timeline, and then the real start of the timeline is at the meat packing plant, and the transgretion of the story makes a little more sense. at least in the first part of the film.

Comment: There was no call from God, they had a dream, watch the movie over again, in the beginning when they are in church, the priest is talking, listen to the priest and then when they are dreaming they both dream of what the priest is saying, it isnt God, it is the priest. Not critisizing anyone, just correcting, thanks

Comment: ps i''m not criticizing this movie in any way, shape, or form because the movie is just incredible but just to state the facts the movie isn''t morally correct for all those talking about morals, yes the Mcmanus brothers got a call from God in the prison but ask yourself this, would God really give someone a calling to go out and kill someone? correct me if i''m wrong but he said "vengence is mine"

Comment: the boondock saints is simply the best movie ever made, me and my friends get together and watch it religiously because it''s so sweet. I can not wait until ALL SAINTS DAY comes out! sometimes i think it''ll never come out in theaters since the original was an underground movie itself and the boondock saints came out in 99'' and it''s now 2005 and the sequel is still not out, wtf?

Comment: I love this movie. However, there is one comment on this site that makes me a little weary of people in their reviews of movies. Whoever said that Conner and Murph were out to rid the city of evil without the blessing of God completely missed what Duffy was trying to express. The two brothers receive a call from God while they spend the night in prison. If that was not obvious I feel very sorry for you and your whole outlook on movies in general. Other than that, this movie rocks, the review rocks, and all OTHER comments on this site rock.

Comment: This film was wonderful! It had enough humor and melodrama to make two "Irish Twins--Shut-up" into these loveable asskicking kings. It also gave a social commentary about the state of our society. Cops are caught up in red tape and that sucks. It takes a lot, even a message from God, to get these to stimulate enough to go out and do something about it, maybe if dirty cops did that instead kidnappings and drug deals the streets would be safer

Comment: You are correct in all aspects as to your review. This is a HIGHLY recommended film. The Moral aspect as to who does judge and WHat we should do with these people is exhibited in the highest regard and makes you ponder the true value of our "Justice System". Sean Patrick Flannery, Norman Reedus, and William Dafoe, Really display a rare talent of being able to play roles that really have you believing in what is happening. I fully believe that this movie (if it hasn''t already) will fall into Cult Status. Because its not the Critics after all who judge a movie. It''s us. But wonderful review please keep it up. Looking forward to the follow-up movie this year.

Comment: I thought that the movie was a hit. I watch it at least once a week and i think in some weird kind of way that they have a good message. The way the world is today, it would be nice if you had some unknown protectors out there cleaning up all the trash. The thing that get''s me is that in the movie God is telling them what he want''s them to do. It''s basically divine justice and i would be the first in line if there were another movie that was along these lines.

Comment: Hi,
I believe that this movie is the epitamy of everything that is good and evil. Conner (Sean Patrick) and Murphy (Norm Reedus) know what must be done to protect eachother aswell as their friends. They are doing something so out of reach that it makes sence. And the strange thing about it is, they are really good at it. Like they state in the film themselves. There are a lot of funny moments along with the action. Like when David Della Rocco shoots the cat on accident and actually said "Is it dead?" Just for the extra humor. There is a lot of suspence and not understand what exactly is going on. There is one boob shot, but it''s just nother part of the humor of it all. I like the brotherly aspect of it all. Don''t worry, I haven''t forgotten to mention how HOT Sean and Norm are on screen with their accents. I just with they were real accents. Which i''m not completely sure they aren''t? Could anyone answer that one for me? I mean, I''ve seen Sean in "Powder" and Norm in "Blade II" but i don''t know for sure. But anyway! I love the movie and it should be adored by all! And i''m not just saying that because i''m Irish aswell :D

Comment: Good review, but the first paragraph really missed the point:

:This action/comedy film about two Irish brothers who mistakenly think they are blessed, after succeeding in a fight for their life with two nasty Russian mobsters.

No. They were like that before the fight with the two russian mobsters, before the toilet throwing scene, before the barfight scene, and even before the church scene with which the movie opens.

They never consider themselves blessed. Only that they are doing Gods bidding, and that what they are doing needs to be done. They don''t think mistakenly about anything referring to themselves. They are simply two religious brothers who try to clear the city from the scum, etc etc etc, and clearly _are_ blessed, because through it all, they take on entire mafia families and come out victorious.

Other than the first paragraph, great review =)
