Rare Bird was an early British prog rock band. The band formed in October 1969, and got their debut album out the following month, which is really quite an accomplishment, since it usually takes a band a year or more after their formation to get an album out, not to mention it usually takes two or three months to get the album out after the band records it. This was the very first album ever released on Charisma, the same label that gave us Genesis, Van der Graaf Generator/Peter Hammill, Lindisfarne, Capability Brown, and even Monty Python. Rare Bird was an odd band, for they had two keyboardists (David Kaffinetti on electric piano, Graham Field on organ), as well as bassist (Steve Gould, who also handled vocals), and drummer (Mark Ashton), but no one on guitar. It's interesting to note that Kaffinetti later appeared on the infamous 1984 movie of a mock heavy metal band, This Is Spinal Tap. By that time, his name was shortened to David Kaff. He played Vic on that film. Rare Bird had a rather unique sound and the powerful vocals of Steve Gould helps. The album has some really great prog rock numbers like "Beautiful Scarlet", "Iceberg", and the ever sinister "God of War" (my favorite). The album also features "Sympathy" which was actually a hit for these guys in Continental Europe. Written, obviously, during the Vietnam War-era, the song features lyrics I feel are just as relevant today (if not more so): "Sympathy is what we need, my friend/'Cause there's not enough love to go around" and "Half the world hates the other half/and half the world has all the food/and half the world lies down and quietly starves/'Cause there's not enough love to go around". In this era of conservative politicians screwing us all, and threats of going to war in the Middle East, it's real easy to relate to this song. "Times" is an odd one, because it starts off sounds like a 1950s song, sounding like how Little Richard might sound like if he played organ rather than piano, then the second half goes in to more typical prog rock territory. There are a couple of other shorter pieces like "You Went Away", "Nature's Fruit", and "Bird On a Wing" which are all great songs. I always felt Rare Bird's debut is a bit underrated compared to their 1970 followup As Your Mind Flies By, in fact I actually prefer this album to As Your Mind Flies By (which is a fine album, by the way). More great music, particularly if you like early, organ-driven British prog rock.

Comment: Message for Angel Luis.
Did anyone get back to you with a scan ?? I have three or four Rare Bird albums in the loft - if you havnt got a scan yet, I''ll search them out. Leave a message here as to how to get in touch.
There''s a long tale about how I came by the first album, which I may post here sometime - and in case anyone is interested, my favourite tracks are Beautiful Scarlet, Sympathy and You Went Away. Difficult to put them in order though !
Message for Ben:
I''d never linked the lyrics of Sympathy to the Vietnam war, but the I agree 100% with you that the sentiments are so very appropriate today ! A minor point - the lyrics include ''cos there''s not enough love to go round'' not ''go around''. No time for the extra syllable !!
I have the album on CD and regularly play it, but maybe it''s time to get the old vinyl out again !

Comment: Hello to all Rare Bird fans. For some personal reasons (too long and personal to be explained), I am trying to get the cover of the first Rare Bird album (the one that looks like an "aztec" bird). If anyone has this vinyl, please take a scan and send it to me. It appears also in a CD with the "Somebody is watching" album. I''ll be gratefull forever.

Comment: And here''s what appears to me now as the million euro question about which is the real original of the "Sympathy" song... Is it Rare Bird or Family Dogg & Steve Rowland?? At first I didn''t believe it, but two very similar versions exist. For those interested, listen and compare (and please ignore the difference in mp3 quality) here:
http://www.hansvandijk.com/Sympathy - I am eager to hear your ideas..

Comment: Just SUPER I finally found any information about the "sympathy" song, that has been in my head ever since I heard it when I was 12 or so - it''s the kind of tune and lyric that will pop up when I''m thoughtless, for instance in the shower in the morning and my mind is still relatively blank.. can you imagine.. it had a lifetime impact on my mind.. (and thereby still has). I liked the fact that Marillion covered it later, but it''s just not the same as the original.. and I knew NOTHING about the original, only remembered what it sounded like, and it stayed with me that way for more than 35 years. Thank you. Stay hip.

Minor correction: David''s character in This Is Spinal Tap is named
Viv Savage, not Vic.

Comment: If you like the first 2 Rare Bird LPs, you probably will like the spinoff band Fields led by organist Graham Field in 1971. It''s more true to Rare Bird than the later 3 Rare Bird LPs on polydor without Field in the lineup. It''s not easy to find but it might be a japanese import and old vinyl copies show up frequently on Ebay. Try to find one with the original included poster.

Comment: Hello Neil,
On another forum you recently wrote:
I thought i would leave the best till last, there is talk of a Rare Bird reunion gig!Now that would be a mind blower!
Any further news on that. It''d worth coming over to the UK for (if it''s not too late already).
In the meantime, allow me to recommend you Dutch prog rockers Alquin.
They recently reformed too ant to great success; Sounding as strong as in the early 70s they''re even back wrtiting and recording new material. Worth checking out, f.i. at www.alquin.tk

Comment: rare bird was and is one of my great favorites since i''ve heard them first time in 1970, sorry, ever only on vinyl. and this band is, i think, underestimated, but should stay high in the rankings. My special song is "hammerhead", which not shows their full complexity but is going really straight. But i like also the more lyrical and progressive songs, especially the "iceberg"-intro. some songs sounds a bit to sweet, but in some hours i like also this. with my band i play "sympathy" but the other guys never get the soul of this song, so i must give all my feeling in the bass play.
many greetings to all rare bird lovers

Comment: Love this band,I had the good fortune to see Rare Bird perform live four times(Yes,i''m showing my age). They were quite simply the best band i ever saw(and i''ve seen plenty)to see them perform compositions such as "Beautiful Scarlet" "God of War" "You went Away" and "Flight" was music heaven.I agree with the Ben that this album is underrated compared to "As Your Mind Flies By" . But if you like keyboard driven rock get both of the original Rare Bird albums as they were the very best!
