Location of the NORTH COUNTRY FAIR. "Each summer on June 20-23 (sometimes on the 19th, depending which one falls on Friday) there is a Summer Solstice Celebration held in this little northern Alberta town. Hippies and free spirits alike come from all over to enjoy this wonderful enlightening experience of live music, new age work-shops, dancing and of course the artisan market. Situated beside the Lesser Slave Lake, there are many great places to camp on and off the fair site. It's like taking a step back in time, if only for one memorable weekend a year, to see beautiful people join together and celebrate the longest day of the year. This year is the 20th celebration of the North Country Fair and it will surely be a huge gathering of the free."

Comment: I was about 8 years old when I went to Jousard Festival with my aunt and uncle in 1992 or so. We had the best time. Everyone was so happy and I was safe to wlk around with my friends and see the tents. I have very fond memories of the festival and I plan to attend again next year. Thank you for putting on such a great event. For everyone who has not been, go and check it out. It''s the best place to get away and meet some great people.

Comment: I lived near Joussard six years ago. I am like to think I was one of your supporters instead of one of the "inspite ofs". I am so happy for you that you are getting your own land, it has been a long time coming. Good luck.

Comment: As one of the "hippies" who help organise the North Country Fair I would have to agree that Joussard is not exactly a hippie haven. We do run an alternative, solar powered private school there but it is mostly in spite of, rather than with the help of, most of the local residents.
We recently purchased a rather large parcel of property to the south and east of Joussard and are in the process of moving our holdings there. We have a fairly active small community of like minded antique hippies up here.
The North Country Fair will be held on our own land June 16-21 2005!!!

Comment: I''ve travelled high and low across Canada to find ''paradise'', and the Annapolis Valley in Nova Scotia has loads of organic farms and back-to-land hippies probably due to the cheap older heritage homes for sale in the region. They''re practically giving these homes away. Bear River in ''the Valley'' as they say is known as an arts and environmental hang-out. The Annapolis Valley has stunning scenery, and the mildest weather in Eastern Canada. Forget about the Eastern shore of Nova Scotia - really conservative. The West Coast along the Bay of Fundy is more liberal and the vegetation more lush with green forested hills and farmland (and in some places along the Fundy shore, you''ll even find turquoise tinted waters).

Comment: I was in a (hippie)Cafe here in the US the other night, discussing the Iraq war after a very enlightening presentation on said war. I made the comment that if GWB was re-elected I was LEAVING the US (my family has been here since 1726)! The dude next to me said "where will you go, Canada?" I said "Maybe". He said "They will reject you, and you can thank all those (idiots) who flooded them before you". What''s his deal? Can anyone tell me if Canada rejects US hippies if they flee the US? strawbooboo@yahoo.com
