"Particularly Gabriola, Hornby and Cortes. Enchanted, laid-back, new-age. Hornby Island does in fact have hippies. However, the island has become overcrowded and increasingly slick and commercial. Not so "groovy" now. Cortes Island, which is rather remote and is a pleasant looking place, was inundated by marine radiation dumps from government ships about 30 years ago before pollution regulations were enforced. Many people on this island have developed cancer as a result of this, including the majority of the local police department who regularly patrol the area. Under no conditions, would I ever choose to live there, as a hippy."

Comment: I''ve travelled high and low across Canada to find ''paradise'', and the Annapolis Valley in Nova Scotia has loads of organic farms and back-to-land hippies probably due to the cheap older heritage homes for sale in the region. They''re practically giving these homes away. Bear River in ''the Valley'' as they say is known as an arts and environmental hang-out. The Annapolis Valley has stunning scenery, and the mildest weather in Eastern Canada. Forget about the Eastern shore of Nova Scotia - really conservative. The West Coast along the Bay of Fundy is more liberal and the vegetation more lush with green forested hills and farmland (and in some places along the Fundy shore, you''ll even find turquoise tinted waters).

Comment: That story about marine radiation dumps off Cortes Island is the biggest pile of bs whacked out rumour I''ve heard in ages. I lived on Cortes for years in the 70''s and 80''s, there''s no truth to that rumour, yet people insist on spreading it. Personally, knowing the weird sense of humour and healthy cynicism of Cortes Islanders, I think it''s just one of those rumours we made to keep the tourists away, and scare off those stupid weekend hippies who inundate us every summer, goof off and do nothing, then leave as soon as the rain comes and they might have to carry wood. Hague Lake on Cortes is still the best darn place to take your clothes off and jump into the water that I can think of, and I''ll never forget diving off the rocks on acid into 40 feet of clear water that looked like it was 4 feet deep cuz it was so clear, and having the sky and the water shift places on me in mid air, leaving me twisting my body furiously trying to get my direction as I landed ignomiously on my back to great laughter...
Marine radiation...heh...heh...heh. Yeah, and the ducks are poisonous too....

Comment: I camped on the Gulf Island of Galiano. I saw hippies every day gathering seaweed, so I''m assuming they lived there. It was a beautiful spot, with holly bushes & trees with bark the color of bricks, that lost their leaves in spring rather than fall; I could watch the whales, check out marine life in the tidal pools & take in the beautiful ocean & island views. It would,ve been great for cycling or horseback riding, too.
I don''t know any history of the area, but their are locals, artists among them & the ferry stops there on it''s way to Vancouver Island.
