If this happens, god forbid, the leaders of our country will become perhaps some of the most hypocritical people on this earth. If we started a war with Iraq, in essence, would we not being doing the same things they have done to us? War is just idiotic...it is simply violence against violence and the winner is the one who commits the most volitale actions. As humans we have the capacity to reason, and we should use this talent to rise about animalistic behaviors such as violence to solve problems. This is just my opinion though.

The Bush war-room is filled with political heavyweights with integrity and intelligence that deserve our undaunted respect.

If you side with the spineless Europeans you are fooling yourself that peace will happen by inaction. The winners of wars make the rules, period.

Just like Pearl Harbor, US government thinks we are to important to get hit. As for Iraq, they do need another power other than usane (or whatever) to run that devasted country. Bush is only using threats because he knows if we go into Iraq it is possible that we will loose our large oil support. I don't want to be involved in this war, however they need to get benladen and they need to get usane out of the country. I see alot of anger here. I completely understand why you are angry, i am to, its natural. But we can not allow anger to become part of what we do. We must have the courage to take the hate, the mocking, the anger of others and respond only with peace and love. The future will someday lie in our hands, it already kind of does, and if we shun and turn away those who must learn of peace and love, then we are as bad as them. If we respond with anger then we are NOT spreading peace, we are spreading more war, more hate, more pain. If we respond with Peace then they will see the way, they will see it IS possible to live in a society of peace. I would protest the war, but we cannot hate the soldiers or the goverment, they are corrupt, but if we cannot teach them of non-hate then no one will. I never heard Ghandi or Dr. King yelling at how there "enemys" we're terrible, worthless, awful people. If you cannot go forth with a message of peace, and peace alone, then you are not a real hippy. We can do it, we can teach love and peace, but we have to accept it first. So peace and love my brothers and sister, I know that we can do it.......

The PR reason for committing us against Iraq is Saddam "Insane's" so called weapons of mass destruction. But, if this guy truly had such weapons, don't you think he would have already used them on the most hated country over there? If he had such weapons, Israel would be a radiated pile of dust right now.

Maybe he does have such weapons, but then so does Israel, probably every country in the middle east, and so do we. Weapons we've used before: Hiroshima, Vietnam (agent orange), land minds. Our entire weapon's system is one of mass destruction, which we have proudly used throughout the world.

It is time to take to the streets, as was done during Vietnam. The differences now are that we can prevent a war. We must also reclaim our flag. The Stars and Bars were always meant to represent justice and freedom. It's time we claimed that symbol for what it was intended for. Besides, if progressives and peaceniks start waiving it as our symbol, won't that just piss the "right" off?

Its all fair that we know what all nations are able to do with tecnology. (pardon my spelling) If we do not know we could recieve a surprise attack. Which is the only reason why I think someone would want to HIDE what they have from us. The reason being that they want to pull a surprise attack on America (hint hint rent the movie "The man who saw Tomarrow") We are living in very dangerous times. Man has gained so much knowledge in the past 60 years, more then he has gained in the past 1000 years. Now with all this knowledge half of the world is not ready for. Over half of this world is still living in the middle ages, with morals and laws simialar to a superstious cave man. For these sort of persons to gain control of these weapons with out a mature and up to date look on life IT could be very dangerous. So by us going into Irac and laying down the law maybe the only choice that we have to protect our freedom. And believe me I know that the word freedom can be a very "controversial" word for America and this hippie sight. But what we have in America is far more free then any other country on this planet as of today and there is only room for more progress. Although war is far from progress; but we are dealing with a barbaric intelligence and maybe the only way we can lay down the law with this sort of people is to meet them at their own terms. Even as wrong as it maybe its probably our only choiceTO PROTECT OURSELFS. I just hope that one day we will relize that there is another way to resolve issues in this world and there is another way that we could live together. POWER TO THE PEOPLE who love, good will over come evil for the 1000 years of peace.

US since 9/11: Lessons and conundrums Vir Sanghvi
September 14

Last week, I argued that America had failed to launch a genuine global war against terrorism in response to September 11.

Instead, I said, the US went it alone and fought a private battle that saw it aligning with those whom we see as sponsors of terrorism. Worse still, it justified its response in terms — revenge, wanted dead or alive, violations of national sovereignty — that it would regard as entirely unacceptable were any other nation — especially India, which has also been a victim of terrorism — to proceed on the same basis.

The overwhelming response to that column — clearly, the newspaper-reading classes are disappointed with US policy — has led me to conclude that perhaps we need to think more about the impact of September 11 from an Indian perspective. We've spent the last week submerged under a sea of September 11 memoirs and analyses but precious little has been said from our own perspective.

On Monday, Roli Books released Journalism After September 11 at the Foreign Correspondents Club in Delhi. I was one of those who spoke but, listening to the others who commented, it struck me how much remains to be said about our response to that attack and its consequences.

Here is a brief run-down — in no particular order —- of what I see as the lessons of September 11 for us in India.

The US response in the immediate aftermath of September 11 was one of disbelief. Somehow America had believed that it was exempt from attacks of this nature.

For most of us whose knowledge of America comes from its popular media, this came as something of a surprise. American fiction is obsessed with the idea of a terrorist strike on the US — if not on New York itself. In the late 1970s, the bestselling novel The Fifth Horseman dealt with terrorists sneaking a nuclear device into New York City. The same theme was recycled in the George Clooney movie The Peacemaker. In Thomas Harris's Black Sunday, the Superbowl was in danger; and in one of Tom Clancy completely unreadable Jack Ryan novels, a rogue Japanese pilot actually crashes a civilian airliner into Capitol Hill killing the US President.

Yet, when the attacks came, Americans couldn't believe it.

The second lesson lies in the manner in which America held together. It is clear that there was a huge security failure at Boston Airport — the terrorists should never have been able to get on board. It is becoming clearer that there was also a serious intelligence failure —- each day, we see new evidence of the CIA and FBI's ineptitude.

If any of this had happened in India, it would have taken us 10 minutes to scream ‘security failure', 15 minutes to shout ‘intelligence failure', and half an hour to demand the Prime Minister's resignation.

There is much to learn from the way in which America came together. Administration and opposition united in a completely bipartisan manner. There were no recriminations. There was no finger-pointing. There was no race to find scapegoats, no demand for anyone's resignation and no attempt to earn political mileage. Of course, there were questions of accountability — the CIA and the FBI have both been criticized over the last year — but these came later. The first priority was to cope with the crisis.

As journalists, we can also learn from the conduct of the US media in the aftermath of the tragedy. Though few of us in the media will admit it, we demonstrate very little respect for the dignity of victims. Any coverage of a terrorist attack, a train accident or a natural disaster treats victims as inanimate objects, not deserving of any dignity. We carry pictures of dead bodies, we encourage relatives to weep and wail for the TV cameras and then, once we've moved on to the next story, we forget about the victims.

Contrast this with the manner in which the US media handled the WTC tragedy. There were relatively few shots of dismembered bodies, hard

WOW,MAN! their still planing on attacking iraq its a shame. alot of the government and the republicans talk about how the hippies brought this country down on its knee's in the 60's, but i guess they dont realize that their the one's that's bringing this country down on it's knee's by starting wars. i heard that the government and the president is planning on spending $200 billion to attack iraq, we could buy every iraqian a house cheaper than that, we could help poor families in iraq, we could feed the homeless women and children, but no the government would rather use it to murder them instead of helping them and i just cant dig that, man! so i just think they could spend it on something that actually matters like peace, love and freedom, man! i got to split so ill catch you later.

Gulf invasion simulation (Score: 0)

Have you heard about the US Army's simulation of the invasion of an unspecified 'military capable Mid-Eastern country' this summer?
Costs: $ 250,000,000.- Participants : 30,000 , assisted by tens of thousands computer-simulated soldiers and weapons.

There were two parties: Blue, the invaders, led by the admiral of the US Navy's Second Fleet (forgot his name :o ) and Red, the defenders;led by an Ex-marine, a Vietnam veteran. Note: Blue outnumbered Red by 3:1 and was technologically superior.

You'd expect Blue would annihilate Red. Not. The Red commander ordered to fill civil airplanes and ships (you know, like, speedboats, fisher's ships, Cesna's) with explosives and patrol the coastline. When Blue launched its 'suprise attack' these ships and planes kamikazed on Blues vessels. Sixteen vessels, including one carrier, were sunk. If this 'exercise' were real, 16,000 American soldiers would have died. Instead of using the Ultra-short wave radio he was supposed to use (but could be tapped by Blue) , the Red leader used the mosque's criers for communication.

After a few days when several attempts of Blue had failed and 75% of the Blue army had perished, officials paused the simulation. Blue's soldiers where revived, the sunken ships where suddenly back in the game. The red leader was forced to use his radio and was told not to look while Blue performed their landing, and not to use any more of his 'creative' ideas. The red leader quit the simulation, saying this was not just cheating, but ruining the scientific aspect of the simulation; You can ensure Blue's victory by playing against a shackled opponent, but can you learn anything from such a 'realistic battlefield simulation'?

No.

I think this illustrates perfectly how any mission can fail, how there can always be massive casualties, and why war aint fun.

You people just enjoy protesting war. That guy in Iraq has screwed with the world for a while now. If the U.N. is not going to enforce it's decisions, then it serves no purpose and people like Hitler can run rampant. It WAS founded to stop these dictators. Unfortunately, war IS necessary from time to time. If we hadn't bombed Japan, who knows how much longer that war would have dragged on and how many MORE people would have died. VIOLENCE IS A PART OF REALITY; join us there! Find a real cause to fight, you tree-hugging, weed smoking, shaggy-haired, tie-dyed throwbacks to a generation that I am very thankful is long gone. Peace and love, you retards.
