If you visit a country you get to know it's individual inhabitants. I'd say in most cases your view of them will improve. But my opinion on individual Americans isn't that bad. I don't dislike them more than a random European ;-) .

What I wonder is : do you have a good view on the collective character of a group when you're inside of it? If I went to, let's say, South America, would that make it possible for me to see the hypocritical side of Europe's critique on America? Would living outside of America for a while make Americans more self-critical?

Something else just popped up in my mind; but I'll post it in a new first-generation reply :) ...
