Orlando, Florida
"Gainesville is not all the bomb that you say it is. it is not the "hippy capital" of phlorida. there are kydz there cause there is a college. that's it. just a college. if there were no college, the town would be non-existent. there are some nice kydz there, but no family. they have some good shows maybe once a month. i live in Orlando. it is mofuckin awesome! i have lived in many places and for about 6 mos. in different places in phlorida. The "hippy capital" is definitely St. Augustine. SUCH A fabulous family!! there's a beach, there's plenty of places to sell crafts on the street all year round. there's tons of cool shit like an old fort that you can trip around in and plenty of kynd folks. not much of a nightlife unfortunately. They never have big name bands. Orlando on the other hand is a mecca. we get awesome shows here pretty regularly. we've got the house of blues, we've got a university, we're an hour from the beach, an hour from Daytona Beach, not much further from Gainesville, a little less from St. Augustine. we've got the big ekon river. two drum circles every week. we've got the Orlando family. we've got the hippy hole."

Orlando, Florida Posted by HippieNana on 2013-05-04 22:24:19 My Score: I was born & raised in Orlando, Fla. in the 60's & 70's. It is not a
Hippie Haven, it's a tourist town. Communes are hard to find but drugs are
plentiful and so is the law. I would never suggest Orlando to anyone to live as
a "hippie" Love, Peace, Joy |

Orlando, Florida Posted by steadychillen on 2011-12-26 14:45:45 hahahah...no... orlando a hippie haven?? i lived in orlando for about a year, by far the worst place ive ever lived.. ghetto or rich.. the ghetto people are very dumb, if your young and a free spirit you will find yourself in many bad situations because trouble follows you here.. florida has very little open minded intelligent people to talk to about things that matter... the rich people are very stuck up, out of touch with the world... all drive bmws and lexus.. shop, eat, sleep, and repeat type people.. the girls are fake, if your a hippie at heart people here will just call ya a stoner, pothead, you know shit like that... people here are on hard drugs.. shootin up roxys and whatever... for what u make, and what youll have to spend, the man will be stickn it to you.... so i said screw it, moved to cocoa beach.. more laid back, but still no hippie haven..def more open minded though.. beachsides has chill people but community is shot. all the old rich people move to the condos, and then create dumb laws.. you cant even take dogs on the beach.. you will see 10+ sheriffs a day who are out to actively pursue marijuana users... really goood krippy tho for like $40 an 8th everywhere, but if you smoke weed in cocoa beach chances of getting caught are high! cops everywhere, very controlled area and alot of wiggas... tampa has alright parts, but is VERY fake...and the scene is ghetto or rich kids who think there ghetoo..i wanna like the sunshine state, bbeen here forrrr years...but if your hippie your might be alright, but if your a hippie who is always into the marijuana culture NEVER come to florida... |

Orlando, Florida Posted by sasafrasassed on 2009-10-08 23:52:40 I have lived in tampa, orlando, ocala, winterpark colorado, northern minnesota. I have been to many festivals, 10k , shwagfest, ultra fest. hippie fest, traveled with the rainbows in ocala, and learned to live the real life. orlando is by far the most chemical head drug infested scene i have been around. I thankfully just moved out of airport area onto a lake:D planes flyin over replaced by whooping cranes. Orlando has the science center cinnedome for pink floyd and many other laser shows. Everyone learn to make the best of life help those drug dealers, and remember life is what you make it no matter where you live. PEACE< LOVE< AND BLOwTOWN. head out |

Orlando, Florida Posted by on 2009-03-31 04:34:48 If anyone is looking for a great hippie happening, find your way to the Plaza Theater this April 25th, near downtown. The address is 425 North Bumby Ave, Orlando, FL 32803. This will be the site of the 4th Annual Spring Jambando, bringing together the likes of Shak Nasti, The Legendary JC's, funkUs, and more, with food, drink, and vendors of all sort. If you're into the hippie culture, and are looking for new/old friends, this is definitely the place to be. Doors open at 4 pm. There will be free beer from 4:30 to 6, and we will rock on until they kick us out (which they've promised not to do). If you are not familiar with us, please go to jambando.com, and check us out. There you'll see all of the bands that make up our "collective." There is definitely something for everyone.
As for Orlando not having a "hippie scene" (which, I don't know if anywhere other than Haight/Ashbury can be called such), I like what the other caller wrote, "You just have to poke around..."
Or, go to Jambando, of course... |

Orlando, Florida Posted by dwill. on 2008-05-12 21:07:03 My Score: Orlando, Orlando... what can I say about it. Yes it does have its drawbacks. and by drawbacks I mean all 2,000 of them. But if you really search for a place a relacation, meditation and tranquility, you will undoubtably find it.
Yes, there is horrible traffic. Yes, there is rampant crime. Yes, people walk around with an ignorant heir about them as if Orlando is a burrough of Miami.
Head to the beach at 2am, take a day to explore the hills of clermont, watch the red moon set over lake eola. My personal favorite was sharing some herb with some friends on top of the suntrust building downtown at 6am. Ive been all over orlando and have never been patronized or discourage about what i was doing.
Orlando is indeed "the city beautiful", but only to those who know how to look.
if you ever need a guide feel free to email me - jvaughn17@atlas.valenciacc.edu |

Orlando, Florida Posted by acemadjlesi on 2008-03-24 09:25:15 I'm getting ready to move to Orlando (Kissimmee) in June and now I'm worried!! So are there ANY hippies out there in Orlando? I'd love to meet them in a few months ... |

Orlando, Florida Posted by Bill O'reilly on 2008-03-19 23:07:45 I moved to Orlando a few weeks ago from St. Petersburg, and found the more relaxed part of Orlando. In my experience, the south side of cities seems to be a lot more laid back and mellow as far as people, traffic, attitudes etc. I'm lookin' for some people to chill with near Kissimmee. Email is brandoncc at tampabay.rr com |

Orlando, Florida Posted by Salyzyn on 2008-01-11 04:35:21 My Score: These complainers are not hippies, they are all stressed out for living in the slums and fail to see local wonders. Looks like the mouse house is blocking their vision, hiding Quality, Peace and Happiness.
Lazy canoe down Econ, Wikeva or Juniper Springs near by. Best wedding setting is at Lori Wilson Park overlooking Cocoa Beach, a natural backdrop. Nearby nude beaches. Wander along Lake Eola Downtown on Saturdays, exotic animals, or Sundays for art, backrubs and home cooking. October starts the weekly art festivals. Edmontonian buskers come down for the Fringe Festival for a real imported treat! |

Orlando, Florida Posted by FreeLeverette on 2007-11-03 05:20:55 My Score: No. I live in orlando, and it is drug dealers, gangsters, and crap tourist attractions. It is also a very poorly laid out city. There is no essence to hippies at all, not even a store selling a tie dye shirt. |

Orlando, Florida Posted by DeviantDreamer on 2007-10-08 18:08:39 Just because a Community has some hippy elements does not make it a haven. Orlando is crowded, and one of the most commercial cities I've ever seen. The only thing it has going for it is that it's close to Ocala National Forest.
I live in St.Petersburg FL, outside of Tampa. Not exactly a haven, but there's a drum cirle at the beach and the patch has monthly events. The most interesting thing about this city is that Jack kerouac lived here a couple times, and unfortunately died here. Write me if anyone wants more info on st.pete or jack. |

Orlando, Florida Posted by Jon on 2007-08-27 01:31:14 I live in Orlando and its not hippy at all. Orlando is a very unique place. You got : Kissimiee- Ghetto, drug dealers and Spanish. Disney/Universal/ Entertainment area- Tourist. Winter Park- snobs and money. UCF area- college, lots of hot girls but as fake as their boobs. And Downtown- lots of construction everywhere, locals instead of tourists, lots of bars and banks.
Orlando is a younger city but its growing too fast. We have one of the highest murder rates in the country. Homelessness and gun violence surround the area around I-4. Traffic sucks here. The weather crazy. It'll rain everyday, hot and humid all summer, then it wont rain for months so everything catches fire. Hurricanes, tornados, heat aadvisories, freeze warnings, hail, lightning, ice, drought, and flooding.
People dont make much money here and it seems to be a place for singles.
All in all, Orlando's ok- Theres alot to do, but it all gets old. Great herb all the time from Miami, close to the beach, lakes all over, close to NASA, and you can see the shuttle launches from here. |

Orlando, Florida Posted by Gypsy on 2007-02-18 02:52:34 As a native floridian and a child of the 60's i can say this place sucks since the mouse moved in in '72. there may be some genuine people here, but we are far between, the gaps filled by immigrants, tourists, plastic yuppies; i don't even want to go on - - listing the sh*t makes me sick. Now that I've found this board, I'll return & list me email addy so any real/genuine peaceloving meditators (or aspirants) who want to eat healthy, take care of our bodies, minds, souls, the earth, etc etc, can contact me. I've managed to keep my Self through all the sick changes here; perhaps there is at least one other kindred spirit in the vicinity. Not the "dreamcather earrings & find your spirit guide" set, but a genuine, real, dare i say (at least pertially:>) enlightened being who remembers and endeavors to live the life we claimed as ours in those days. Here is a piece of my writing; a poem I made in response the the surge in nationalism after the 9-11 atack. It's dated 10.30.01
Where are all my brothers from the 60’s
Where have all my sisters gone from those days, too
The machine’s still makin’ war
Just like in the days of yore
I’m still marching ‘gainst the killing
Where are you?
Calling all my fam’ly from the 60’s
Have you sold out to the system through the course?
While the stripes now and the stars
Are flyin’ from the cars
My peace flag is still waving
Where is yours?
Are you driving home from corporate in your $40K SUV?
Are you watching the bombs bursting on primetime news TV?
Do you feel some sense of justice when you see the death and flames?
Were you really never with us or have you forgotten somehow; changed?
We spat upon the war pigs in the 60’s
We protested the politics of fools
Our voices clear, our stance then strong; unwavering
What’s happened now? Is killing somehow cool?
My brothers and my sisters from the 60’s
Abandon not that which you then stood for
It’s true it’s 40 years now since the 60’s
But there’s still no glory EVER found in war . . .
Sooooooooo, if anyone is still reading, and can fathom my point-of-view and might have some interest in finding out who I am and sharing your Self with someone who knows, post a comment in reply. I'll be happy to give you my email addy.
Peace, gypsy

Orlando, Florida Posted by Heidi on 2004-07-27 06:03:27 I have lived in Orlando for 4 years. Some of the places here are pretty interesting. Mostly it is just families coming to Disney and people in Kissimmee selling drugs. If you don't speak Spanish, it can be difficult. I would rather live near the beach. I believe in the hippie lifestyle of speaking one's mind and appreciating nature. That maakes it hard to live here because every day there is a new 7 11 being built or a new suburb for the rich people from New Jersey who insult the south yet choose to call it their home. |

Orlando, Florida Posted by isa on 2004-07-05 20:33:35 hip thing to do in central florida
-take a canoe around one of the springs.
florida has such beautifully lush nature
-beaches semi nearby.
semi-accepted nude beach past new smyrna.
no dogs or camping.
-lots of ism
-lots of music compared to some places, less compared to others.
a lot of cool acts though, deliberately avoid florida.
-some cool shops. not really old and funky, but, supplies are available.
- weather. you won't freeze your ass off very often,
but be prepared to sweat and burn.
very humid.
bad points
-not a real nice vibe here.
-the scene is very split and clicky
-it is a tourist destination, bringing all that entails
-not a lot of cool gatherings
-the law.
we had people at a dead show tear gassed here, farm broken up,
rainbow roadblocks and cops walking around taking pictures of people,
etc.
all in all.
if you are a "hippy" who wants a place to get strung out and blow your money, you'd fit right in.
if you are looking for a place where people are getting together to make the world a better place, keep moving on friend.

Orlando, Florida Posted by luna99 on 2003-09-02 21:17:23 I lived in orlando for close to two years and as much as I was looking forward to moving there, I have to say, I hated it. The only people I met while living there were very "fake" people all about the music pop biz and tryin to tell me bout the next video they were making or band they were opening up for. The music scene is pretty cool, what with house of blues and other places, but it's not worth the type of people you have to put up with living there. Also, cause it's a tourist town, a lot of people come and go quickly, making it hard to make REAL friends. Most people I met would act like they were your friends if you were out somewhere, then the next day if they saw you out they would act as if they didn't know you. I'm so glad I moved. Orlando is a cool place to visit, but not to live. (at least for me) |

Orlando, Florida Posted by GypsyFaith on 2003-06-04 15:30:30 I live in Orlando and am in desperate need of a drum circle where and when can I find it? That is if it is still going on. I will remain hopefull. :-) |
