Last Week's Question:
What are you going to do for Valentine's Day?

Previous Weeks Questions:

What would you like to do next New Year's Eve?

Should marijuana be legalized, decriminalized, or what?

What are your New Year's Resolutions?

Should Clinton be impeached?

How can the world achieve lasting peace?

What's wrong with the world economic system?

What do you think of President Clinton now?

What can the old hippies teach the young hippies?

What are YOU doing to make a difference?

Should the U.S. or Nato send troops to Kosovo?

What are the possible dangers of genetic engineering?

Do the nuclear tests in India and Pakistan presage another arms race, or worse?

What are the most pressing ecological issues facing the world in the year 2000?

Can we call ourselves hippies if we don't protest the injustices we see around us everyday?  Just because the 60's are long gone, have our consciences gone too?  Did we "cop out" and buy into the "system"?  Do we only care about our jobs, material possessions, and our vacations?  Don't we owe it to our children to set the example we set as children?  We never did finish what we started.  Are you young hippies ready to take up where we left off?

Have you ever been to a protest or demonstration?

Which is worse: Bombing Iraq or letting Saddam keep weapons of mass destruction?

Which hippy ideals are most needed today?

Do you have to do drugs to be a hippie?

What have hippies done to help the Earth's environment?

In what ways are younger hippies different from the hippies of the 60's & 70's?

Do you think hippies are still a potent social force?

Which hippie do you admire most and why?

What is the most important issue facing hippies today?
What do you really care about?
I care about many things, but most of all I worry. i worry about the way violence is
corrupting our world. Is it just me or is there a shortage of intelligence in my peers? I
worry that I'll never find intelectuals who understand my state of mind. Maybe, although
it may be the hard way, these moronic teenagers will discover that there's so much more to
life than this hell called high school.

Love,
Ilovlennon@studentcenter.org

The thing i really care about is love. To me, everyone has a spot in my heart,
it's up to them to help me find it. As soon as that person finds a spot in my
heart, and they remind me of it, i will show love with more built into it. I
will find theirs and fill it as much as i possibly can. Becasue who wants to
die, and be forgotten. -AcdLvr

I care about every living thing in this world.
I wish people would have appreciation for nature, I dont like how people
throw litter on it and etc... and dont even care.
And I wish for World Peace, Why dont people realize that we are all here
together and if there was World Peace, we would all have a wonderful
journey!
With Love,
Daphodil

Wow, man. This is a coincidence. Just last night, I came home from a
shitty day at work in a bad mood. I couldn't get work out of my head
and I finally said to myself "I don't care about my job". But then this
reflex question came out of nowhere - "Well then, what DO I care about?"

I'm still thinking about it. And seeing the question here at Hippyland
is keeping me thinking. It's one of the coincidences that James
Redfield (and others) have been talking about these days. I guess it
must be a pretty important question for me to answer at this point in
history.

I would have to say I care about family, friends, living things, peace,
justice, freedom, celebration, the environment, creativity in general
(music, art and writing in particular).

What I really care about? This would have to be my friends. I care about
peoples thoughts and point of views, about the problems which young people
today face. About the sudden shortage of wacky tabbacky. I care about the
people which suffered through wars. I care about the American civilization
as it is slowly crumbling apart and loosing all of the morals which have
been built up over time. But most of all I care about the importance of
love and about the feeling someone gets when you show them that you care.

Peace,
Dede

I think what I really care about is all those leaves that have just
fallen, the ones you find seconds after they lost their home in the
trees. These leaves will turn to brown soon, but they smile and enjoy
their last green moments. I pick them up and turn them into bookmarks.
You should too.

I care about life. Not just the living of it but the view on how much you have and that you can actually sit back and take it slow. One year at a time, one month at a time even. I like the idea of getting old and grey, even if I don't make it that long I still like the idea. Or even the era of my 30's and 40's, those I believe to be the best time (for a woman anyway). Hopefully I will still be in the neighborhood of healthy when I hit 70 or 80. My grandmother is 80, blind and has cancer yet she still laughs as loud as possible, tells jokes and scoots around her house like she did when she could see. She appreciates her life and has lived it to it's fullest potential. I don't picture a trip to an amusement park anytime soon but she's managed to keep happy where she is. To be honest I don't like the woman, she gets on my nerves with her set ways and rude opinions but all and all I admire her for the way she has handled herself through her present situation.
I'm only saying that when life gets done or just starts with you that you should be able to look back and say "I'm satisfied" or look ahead and say pretty much go for the same thing. In other terms take life slow, let it crawl by, you don't know how much you have or don't have, aim to make yourself content with life and you'll make others happy when their around you.

I care a lot about the life of Mumia Abu-Jamal, Leonard Peltier, and also Tibetan monks and indigenous peoples of Mexico. A lot of other things and people too. I care about human rights, animal rights, the environment, our corrupt system, politics.. etc.. However i don’t care for the rich elite idiots that oppress people and run things for themselves. I don’t like capitalism.. i don’t like Bill Clinton... I don’t like that fact that USA bombed Iraq.. i don’t like the CIA trafficking drugs into US and weapons out.... i don’t like/care for a lot of stuff... FREE MUMIA!!!!! NOW!!!! check yas later.
~* Janette *~ sexyemu@hotmail.com Oh yes.. I care a lot about the Zapatistas. Au Revoir.

What I care about is the take over of our government by insurance companies.
i mean, really, aren't they the power that is now making and enforcing most of
these ridiculous laws that are sapping away our individual, personal
freedoms? i think so.

I care about the things in the world today, I also love caring for
other people.

Its not much.
I do care about a lot more.

I care about many thing but laltely the two most things have been the
enviroment and Tibet. I've always been involved in helping the enviroment and
the more I learn about china the more I resent them and feel the pain that
tibetians must be going through. Because of these acts that is tearing apart
our culture a group of us are organizing a PEACE hike of the appalachian trail
to raise money for these causes. I am asking my fellow hippies to GET
INVOLVED! To all the original hippies to dust of their old back packs and to
the new generation I ask you to show the world that young people still do have
a voice. LETS MAKE A DIFFERENCE. If you want to have the adventure of your
life , meet new people from across the country and make a difference please

What do I care about?, for me it's hard to say. In this day and age
where many good things that I used to believe in gets trashed. I mean it
seems that nobody cares about anything great. And some just are obsessed
with making money(not respecting and caring for anything around them),
and some have just totally arrogant pride(the attitude). And even then
the so called righteous or christians or whatever are totally
delusioned. Most of them will try to preach something about god or how
you should change your life and so on. But I've seen many that don't
give a shit about the environment, or other spiritual aspects(if it's
anything out side their religion, or they can't connect to it it's none
of their business). I think hypocrites like these reeeeally sucks.
It's really hard to care about things when the majority doesn't seem to.
I'm not looking for sympathy from anyone, but it would be nice if
everybody realized that in order to live happily. We can't go on
screwing people over left and right.
Well I guess that doesn't leave very much.....for now
Perhaps we have to struggle to regain that something that will be worth
caring for. that we have lost some where along the way...

Whats important to me is animal rights. I have been an animal rights
activist and a vegan for about year now. Eating no animals, makes me
feel better, and to know that I saved lives. It really does clean your
mind and soul. I hope that *someday* all humans will be more
compassionate and non-violent towards other living creatures...all I
have to do is dream.....

What do I really care about?
What really makes me feel alive is knowing that I am loved.
Knowing that someone wants to be there with me
It doesn't matter if it is family, friends, my pets, or my boyfriend, James
But at least I also know that if I do not have them I have my own self love
As long as I feel loved I am alive

I really care about happiness.
All I want in life is for myself and everyone I love to be truly happy if
I could have that I would never want anything ever again.

everything else but myself! because i am so utterly detached from my

My one true love. My soulmate. My Paul.

i don't know bout everybody but i care about people being treated with
hate and not with love, about killing innocent people who had no idea
what was going on, about segregation, most whites still think of blacks as
trash and has not accepted them as human beings, but most of all i think
i care about love the most everybody should be treated with love no
matter what color there skin is or what country they came from, no
matter how smart or how stupid, everyone should be treated with love!
peace, love, and harmony 4-ever and always!!!:)

Resoration of the theory that we must love thy neighbor! Peace!

I really care that my puppy (a 95lb yellow lab) gets enough sleep and munchies
to satisfy him today. He's really special to me, not to mention oh so cute!
If the world is ending right now I want to die with my puppy. He's the
closest thing I have to an intelligent male right now in my life. Sad? Yes,
very.

Well...lets talk about what I and most of America cares about. I care
about my health and well being. But seriously, lets talk about what I
don't and neither should the rest of America care about. I DON'T care if
our president has an affair, I DON'T care that we "kill defenseless cows
for our food." I DON'T care what kind of shoes you have. People, why
care about the stupid things in life and why not start caring about each
other as people. It isn't cool to judge others if you don't know who
they are.

I really care about having peace with my friends and family. I care
about making the most beautiful music that I am capable of. I care about
preserving the beauty of the island I live on. I care about getting good
grades. Most of all, I care about being myself and loving it.

peace,

I really care about regaining our civil rights for all of us.(not just our children, but very important)

I really care about who i am. I seem to be more then one person. There's the person inside, the real me, then there is the person that comes out. I really want to work on getting the real me to come out. That seems to be what i care about right now, other then my family.

survival

All I really care about is being young, having fun, and not caring what anyone
else thinks. I always say, you're only young once, so have fun while you can!

what i reallt care about is that is the world get's rid of all our differences
and just accepts everyone for who they are, and loves is kind to all no matter
what color their skin, their sexuality, their physical being, or whatever, and
that the world could just be happy with what they have and just accept it,
even if they have nothing, and just stop fighting and settle things fairly and
peacefully without war or violence and just everyone live peacefully with one
another.
(that and that pot should be made legal)

That man find a way off this rock, Terra Firma, before it comes to the
end of the line or we all wind up taking a dirt nap doing each other in

I really care about love, life and happiness. I really care about simple
beauty found in things in nature, as large as a galaxy, and as small as a
snail shell. I really care about trees and animals. I really care about
music. This is what I really care about.

I care about a girl who doesn't care about me any more. And I can't
stop caring because then I turn into a robot-zombie of the
establishment. I don't want to care about their stupid games. I want
to care about people, cause as far as I can tell, that's the only thing
that's real. I care about all of you and I wish I knew you (in every
sense of the word "knew"). love&peace:)

I really care about the earth

Folks letting other folks be themselves

What are your New Year's Resolutions?

to always be open minded and to stay free sprited no matter who
gets in my way. also, to live in love, peace, harmony and
tolerence.
hippiegirl

This Year I have only three Resolutions, but they are rather difficult to
remember and keep.

The first one: I shall never act rough or rude, even though I had a reason
to be angry. I shall try to keep my temper under control and remember, that
people are childish and I should try to understand them instead of
screaming at them; that only shows, that I´m just as stupid as they are.

The second one: I shall make at least one good thing every Day and help my
fellowbeings by taking full responsibility for my actions and by giving
them as much kindness and assistance that they ever can dream possible. I
also will change my own way of living (for example my way to eat, my way to
spare my freetime - I shall spend more time with my thoughts in Forest -
, my way to treat myself etc. etc. etc.)

The third one: I shall make a great trip to my Mind to find Peace and
Harmony. Only that can help me to keep my resolutions for the last year of
this century, decade and the last one thousand years...

My new year's resolution is to join an environmental club that actually does
stuff, not just talks about it...I want to get into a forest and help plant
trees, maybe buy some rain forest...did you know that 1 acre of rain forest is
cut down every second?? That's a mindboggling number...hopefully I can find
some others around me who want to help as well...my second resolution is to
eat more soy, because I don't get enough of it & my dad worries that I'm going
to become protein deficient...hehe...
Peace

my new years resolution is to stop having so much sex

My New Years Resolution is to stay true to my inner "hippy" self and continue
to be successful in my quest for identity. Peace, -Becca

my new year's resolution is to smoke a stompin' big spliff of beautiful
British Columbian BUD everyday at 4:20 every glorious afternoon all year
long. all of you who think you've smoked some fine herb in your life,
wherever you may be, come on up to british columbia canada we've got the
best in the world. guaranteed to make your hippy new year happy. everybody
must get stoned!

my resolutions are too go further and to try (just a little bit harder) to
save the earth by recycling more, picking up trash, and getting more
involved in saving the earth. I will also make peace with everyone (all the
flowers) on mother earth. I also want to get more into yoga and religious
practicing(I am a Christian.) I will be more tolerant, calm, and do what I
can to make people happy.

I guess my resolution would have to be to act on some of my hippie beliefs.
These would include doing something about the killing of animals for fur,
the cruel treatment of lab animals, cloning, housing the homeless, and
better treatment for the mentally ill. I especially stress this belief,
because I suffer from depression, anxiety, and obsessive compulsive
disorder. There are a lot of ignoramuses that I've encountered, who don't
understand what its like to be mentally ill, and therefore feel that we are
completely incompetent and should be locked away and shut out of society.
But many people don't realize that throughout history, famous people who
suffer from mental illness have made a difference. Such names include
Abraham Lincoln(depression), Vivien Leigh(manic depression), Gameshow host
Marc Summers(obsessive compulsive disorder), and Roseanne(multiple
personality disorder). If these people weren't shut out of society for
their problems, why should it ring true for the less popular sufferers of
schizophrenia, Tourette's syndrome, autism, Asperger's disorder,
dissociative disorder, etc.?

Hello,
My name is Ali Emert. My age is 11. My New Years resolution is
to run a mile a week. (Lose weight)

Greetings Fellow FlowerChildren,
My "New Year's Rez" is to be true to MYSELF and deal with those who I may
let down !!! It's time to be me, be happy, and be true/honest. '99 is too
damn close to the "MILLENIUM" for this 33yr. old teacher to continue down the
same long narrow path!!! Peace, Love, and Happiness is a favorite saying for
our generation for a reason..................don't you think??????????????

who they appear to be. to be who i am and not be afraid of what anyone
thinks. and finally to help others who might need my help in any way.

My resolution is to smoke as much pot as I can

To lead a revolution.

In my opinion, too many people are "hopping on the bandwagon," roughly
meaning that they are just going along with what is trendy or with what
everyone else thinks is right. When did the worldwide powerhouse
America become obsessed with a set of ideas that was brought on by a
chain reaction of "cool" people and a couple of magazine articles?
Whether it be a trendy style of dress, a new, mind dazzling drug, or an
opinion set forth by the bias media, it has to stop now! People are
different in their own way, nobody SANE has a problem with that. All of
the people that "roll with the times" have the gut-wrenching insults to
make these individuals change who they are and what they stand for.
That is why it starts with me. I have been pushed around by the "cool"
crowd long enough. I am no longer going to be pressured by lesser
humans. My mind is going to remain open, but open to what I think is
right, not what the beautiful people think is right. I pass along this
message to all that read this, and to say: stop hopping on the
bandwagon. Be cool with who you are and accept people for what they
are. Don't take anyone's crap and don't give crap to those who are
different.

i will get myself,oh shit now where is my list, just had it,damm happens all
the time.oh yeah,i'll get myself organized and improve my memory, right after i
get something to snack on.all of a sudden i feel hungry.jan

my new year's resolution is to become one with myself and try to realize just how harsh i can be to people sometimes. i would also like to take control of my life a little more.

I want to be one with the animals and the trees, as for the last year the
least i have been is three with the birds, and two with wattle trees. With
native cherry trees i am not even five with, as they do not have the inner
peace that introduced species do.

Smoke better pot, love more people, and vote politco bastards out of
office!

My New Year's resolution is only to keep it real. That's all that matters, is
keepin' it real.

my resolution is to play in the snow with some hot guys

How can the world achieve lasting peace?
to achieve world peace, we must all lose our egos....no pride. Dancing is the process of the ego meltdown.

first, using all the air force and commercial jets that we (meaning the USA) can, dump a shitload of 5 dollar bills on all our ememies and their allies. Then, the next day, dump victoria secret and catalogues.

with the elimination of welfare programs designed to kept the poor down and through increased education of the poor and downtrodden. Education is key to world peace. Violence is an admission of ignorance and education is the only cure to ignorance.

I feel the way to achieve world peace is to stop worring about what you neighbor is doing and start worring about your neighbor. Does this make sense, yes if you were to think more about them instead of what they are doing it would be a nicer place. Stop worring about people's skin color and more about the person themselves. Be a kinder person.

it could do much better if more people enjoyed passing herbs instead of consuming fermented sugars.

The world can achieve lasting peace by surrounding themselves in a peaceful environment. Those who want peace can have it by being around others who want it to, and then it will seem like the world is peaceful!

Mind your own business, take care of life liberty, and the pursuit of happyness at home.Handouts of money don't help, give a helping hand by teaching whatever wherever.

Revelation 15:1 says that Gods going to destroy this world. Ah don"t be sad Hebrews 5:9 says that if we obey God we will have eternal life in heaven. Sounds better than this earth full of hate and crime. Don"t you agree?

We can achive peace by first of all stop pointing out the negative! People are always putting things and people down; telling them what is bad about them, instead of seeing the good! Also, by loving everyone & everything (no matter how difficult it may seem) instead of hating so much. I also think you have to be at peace and confident with your self before you can do these things.
PEACE & LOVE~*~* ~*~*Sunny

It's quite simple, really: sit all the "world leaders" down in one room, pass around a joint, and let them relax and talk to eachother. They'll all be good friends before you know it!!

all you gotta do is get everyone in the whole world to sit down in a big
circle and smoke a huge joint or 2, or 3, or however many joints we can
manage to roll...i guarauntee world peace then!!!!
~aurora

My first thought on how to achieve lasting peace is to kill all the violent morons in the
world, kind of an ironic answer isn't it? This answer made me realize that even peaceful
tree hugging people like me can feel unpeacful feelings. I think that all our unpeaceful
feelings come from anger, so to achieve lasting peace I believe we must find the root of
our anger and come to peace with it.

Stop caring about American children and start caring about children. Stop
caring about American workers and start caring about workers. Why should
it matter whether people are dying in Bosnia or in Boston? They are
people with the same feelings as us. WHY DOESN'T ANYBODY CARE? We could
have fed a million starving African children on what we spent prosecuting
Bill Clinton's blowjob.

If each of us could make the effort to fuck just one foreigner, our
children would have cousins all over the world, and maybe they would think
twice before blowing each other up. %-)

love&peace,
noam@cs.duke.edu

Well - I don't think it's possible given human nature. We would all have
to subscribe to some religion (or collective of religions) that honestly
embraces the value of every individual and that reinforces social
customs and institutions that are in agrement with healthy living
(environmental, sexual, spiritual, emotional, intellectual, aesthetic,
etc). Of course the problem here - as with our current fumblings is that
such an agreement may never be reached. How do you decide what is The
Way? Is there even an answer to the question, 'What is the best way for
people or societies to be?'.

Personally, I think we are all players in a grand, uncontrolled
experiment - there really aren't any rules except what physics
prescribes - the potential and possibilities for the expression of
sentient life are uncountable.

Love,

RJ

world peace will be achieved when everyone learns to accept and enjoy the
differences in everyone. life is beautiful and everyone is different, all our
problems stem from nonacceptence. learn to love...

The only way that the world can achieve lasting peace is for everyone to become a hippie.
There would be no war, or any other kind of conflict. Opposing viewers can

Well, the world can achieve everlasting peace, when people realize that
everyone is the same no matter what race, what color, what opinions they
may have, and no matter what religion they may worship. The people just
need to come together one more time and we will realize that when groups
of people unite they can overcome anything no matter how hard or
difficult the problem may be.
Thanks for listening
Peace,
Dana Renee

In order to attain true, lasting peace, each individual in this world must
be at peace with themselves. You cannot truly love another until you love
yourself. Peace cannot be achieved until we love all fellow humans, our
brothers and sisters. We need to stop judging each other the way we have
in the past, by cultural, religious, economic or social differences. Don't
judge a book by it's cover, and don't judge that person over there because
they look different. We are all living on the same planet, it's time we
started acting like it.

The only way to world Peace--and lasting world Peace--is through finding
Peace within oneself and then SEEing it in everyone else--regardless of what
they claim. In Peace there is no right or wrong, good or bad, etc. there is
just "God Expressing in that moment through those/these people".

Love to all the Flower Children and Hippies of our New World, Dwight
RevDwight@aol.com

How can peace be achieved....how can it NOT be?? It is amazing that after so many years on earth, people still can't keep the past's mistakes in their minds when they make decisions. If people could try and remember that all the previous fighting hasn't led to any kind of break-through miracle happiness, then maybe they could think of a new way to achieve peace - perhaps a peaceful way? The utter hypocrisy of trying to build a Utopia-like land through a Hades-like approach -- who are we kidding? Discipline and rebuttal can only be brought about by returning each opposing blow, administered through the misguidance of some unknown party, with a more steady hand; not a hand that will reprimand by dealing a punishment tantamount to the prior injustice, but by reaching out to lift up. Happiness through love and tolerance; it's the only way.
Peace,
Sarona

Lasting peace would be a beautiful thing indeed. But how can we achieve
peace unless we are all in tolerance of each other and are all on the
same wavelength. To be at peace with the world you have to be at peace
with yourself. Sadly many people never find peace within themselves and
so we will continue to dream of an eternal peace, for maybe it is only a
dream.

Well if everyone in the world was stoned, it would be a pretty mellow
place....
bmg@umr.edu

I don't think that world can achieve lasting peace because....it is obviously
human nature...if the world was able to achieve that, then it would have
happened millions of years ago. People are too narrow minded and obstinate
these days, so i suggest just to make to best of it and live life to the

Write about yourself on the internet.

The best way for everlasting peace would be to rid the earth of dope
smoking, tree hugging, space wasting, coffee sipping, dead listening,
non-showering, unemployed, hemp wearing, touchy-feely, Birkenstock
wearing, smelly hippies. When, and only when that happens, will the rest
of us hard working, clean, realist, unselfish people live in a world
where we can achieve lasting peace.

never give up the dream man

I believe that if everyone in the world gave away flowers and hugs, that no
one could ever stay mad at anyone. Everyone would be happy and things would
be nice. Peace

Open peoples eyes to the problem, TOO MANY PEOPLE.

The only answer that I had came to my mind automatically. The only way
that we all can have peace is if we all just shut up and listen to what
your heart has to say about things. If you have negative thoughts about
something that everyone has positive thoughts about, then you should be
deported to a foreign country like Madagascar. If you have constant
positive thoughts, you should be allowed to do whatever you please. It
is not right to have to put up with all this negativity! Sheesh! Peace
is what makes the world go around. Enjoy!

Shoot all the politicians!

The best way to fix EVERYTHING is to get rid of GREED

EVERYBODY SHOULD TRY TO LEGALIZE MARIJUANA, BECAUSE IT WOULD CALM
EVERYONE DOWN.

The answer to the question in my opinion is wisdom. The best example to
me is children. The powerhouse nations of the world are children.
Greedy, toy grubbing, cowardly, and willing to do anything to get what
they want. With real children this wouldn't be such a problem, they have
time to grow out of it a become mature, understanding adults, hopefully.
But obviously these are BIG children, with BIG toys. Toys that they kill
and devastate each other and themselves with.

We as a society don't have time to "grow out of it". Our home is
diminishing quickly as are our resources needed to sustain ourselves.
Our trees, our air, our water, our wildlife, our brothers and sisters,
....each other, we are killing each other out of greed we refuse to
look ahead.

Pretty much what I believe is we need to get back home, to the Earth.
It's the only one. It doesn't belong to us, we belong to it, it gave us
the bodies that we are in. We as a world have lots of technology, but
what’s lacking is wisdom. We could love each other, if we just had the
wisdom to know that our Love and our Earth is so very much more
important than our everyday affairs, our disputes, and our differences
here on Earth.

The answer is wisdom.

Well, fer starters, we could start bein' nice to each other. When you
see someone else havin' a bad day, man, it's a bummer, so go over an
tell em' somethin' good and like cheer em' up.
You'll feel better. They'll feel better, and ya know what, man? I'll bet
the whole world feels better.
Neato groovy cool and peace man,

peace is an abstract term and is probably never going to
happen!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I think Mary Jane and women’s underwear are the solution to world peace

By smoking weed and telling these bad people that if they don’t stop
fighting that the hippie nation will rise up and kick their ass.

I think long lasting peace can be achieved with pot.
It would be really good if instead of alcohol pot would be legal and
available.
Alcohol makes people aggressive, pot just gets you high and peaceful.
And all military facilities and armies should be cancelled.
Greets:kurt@yunord.net

this is a simple answer to a simple question : just return to the
Psychedelic 60's !

The answer to the question is simple----
everyone needs to be on acid, good acid in fact. Weed helps too. It makes
everyone happy, loving, and peaceful. So instead of picking up a gun, pick up
a phat bowl and pass it to your brother.

Thanx
P.S.--send any free weed my way!

We can maintain peace by smoking more marijuana.

The easiest way to achieve this is to demoralize the military in the
urban sector. We must not let the iron fist of guerilla justice speak
for the entire population!

in reality, its impossible. but if everyone would just live their life
the way they want to, without hurting anybody else, and just mind their
own damn business, and we could get some intelligent, open-minded people
in positions of power, everything would be fabulous. not to mention
boring.

Solution: using nuclear weapons, obliterate all those opposed to world peace, thereby solving all this silly war business. Why be passive?

if every sat down @ da same time & smokes a joint we wood have lasting peace

um.....smoke more pot and impeach clinton

Hey brothers and sisters.......
I have a strong belief in world peace.I believe it can and will be
achieved. All we need to do is join together and spread the love.
"All we are saying...is give peace a chance." -John Lennon
If we put aside our differences and focus on what's important-we can
achieve anything,my friends.Love each other-regardless of race,gender,or
age."You may say I'm a dreamer,but I'm not the only one.I hope someday
you'll join us,and the world will be as
one." <---(from the song "Imagine" by John Lennon)

The world can achieve more peace by not being so damn greedy. Let nothing
go to waste. After you read a book, pass it on. Share everything you can.
Share knowledge, love, food, clothes, shelter.
Don't let anger rule your life. When you get angry, turn to music or some
type of relaxation. Play an instrument (drums are great for releasing your
pent up anger), sing, dance, meditate. But don't fight.
Remember this," The only thing constant in life is change." Always value
what you have because nothing is permanent.
Also, knowledge is everything. Learn as much as you can and teach
others. Follow your dreams and never give up. PEACE!!!!!!!

they can get rid of cars, money, world order, boundries,Mcdonalds!,ect.

we need everyone to co-operate, love and respect one another. The striving
for more money and material things also needs to go.
we need to see that everyone is equal and should be treated that way.
Lastly, we need to abolish war and all the concepts contained within.
I think that with that, we can achieve world peace.

We could ensure world peace by legalizing Marijuana internationally.
Everyone would be happy, at least everyone I know.

MY answer to the question "How can we achieve lasting peace?" Is simply elect women to office..............just messing with ya man. what we should do is not take everything we have for granted. We should stop assuming that everything is always going to be the same and nothing bad will happen out of a supposedly good thing.

the way to achieve everlasting peace is to start small. if everyone in the
world learned to , maybe not love everyone, but to tolerate everyone. if
people learned to communicate w/ their mouths instead of their fists and guns,
there would be no need for war

NO.....
There's no way everlasting peace can happen on this planet. There will always be war and fights among us people.
It has been this way ever since the stone age and will be so in the future too. Its in our animal insticts we inherited from those days, I guess. We all have it inside us. The difference is that in some people it is burried just a little deeper than in other.
We just have to accept this and always have to take this in consideration.
You cant escape reality, man. It will sooner or later catch up with you...

THe world can achieve lasting world peace by living off the land.
Leave your homes get a group of your closest fiends move into the woods
and become your own tribe. There would hardly be any time to fight as
every one would be working the land or keeping their fires started. The
next step would be to legalize all drugs to keep everyone kosher and
happy. It may be a rough life but that is the way I have decided we
should all be living.

What do you think of President Clinton now?
I think of president Clinton now is that he is a disgrace to human kind,
see i am only 12 years old and what will my children think and their
children's children........

He fucks girls and smokes pot. he's like "the hippy in all of us." how can we
dislike him?                                               .

I think the same of him as I did before.  He was OK before, He's OK
now.  Except for one little thing......He should have INHALED..:-)

I'm not angry with President Clinton for the whole Lewinski sexual
relations deal. Nor am I angry with him for lying to the American public
because it's simply my own bias that politics is mostly lies and scandals
and if you don't think that any other political figures haven't all hid the
truth once in a while then I think that you're in denial. Sorry to be so
negative....:)            Good energy & health***Crystal S.

The Clinton ordeal has been blown way out of proportion.  It wouldn't make a difference to me if he had "sexual relations" with every secretary in the White House.  The underlying point here should be that he has been caught in lie after lie.  It's obvious that this President has absolutely no business leading the American people.  I wonder what else he has lied about: Bosnia or maybe Albania?  Politicians lie, that's their job.  But to get caught time after time, he is sending the message to young Americans that it's alright to lie until you are cornered and then simply apologize and all will be forgiven.  When I recall the "show" he put on while denying the Lewinski relations, I am disgusted.  Think of the millions in tax dollars spent to investigate this President, not just the allegations of sexual nature, but his business dealings as well.  And, impeachment hearings certainly will not be cheap!  At least Nixon resigned, saving himself,  his party, and his country from further embarrassment.  MKV

I STILL think he is corrupt!

I think the same thing I have thought of him since the day he announced he was
running for the office!  I still think he is the biggest piece of SHIT to come
down the hill yet.  If you don't, we think differently, and that's cool too.

I think that he is just as capable of running the country now as he was
before the affair. It really bothers me that people are more interested
with his personal life than his profession. Its not like he's the
president of the "how to be a good husband club".

He should have been thrown out from the start, when he said he didn't
inhale..that said it all to me .and what was his definition of inhale
anyway.  And how about his view of what to do with a cigar.  new twist on
the blunt.

President Clinton never espoused many hippy values.  Violent foreign
policy, didn't work very hard against poverty (i.e. violent home
policy), not much of a mover on universal health care, continued to wage
war on his own citizens that use certain drugs.  So now we get
confirmation that he disrespected his wife then lied about it.  Big
deal.  His past actions sucked a lot more in the big scheme of things.

But then again, I'm Canadian - we've got our own problems to worry
about.  To most of us up here, the "Clinton scandal" is good
entertainment, but not much more.

Bill   you   are  my    idol !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Josko

I think that what president Clinton did has been going on in the white house
for a long time now. It's just the fact that he got caught, shall we say, w/
his pants down. Just look into all the rumors about JFK, he had several
affairs w/ some very well known women and our country still looks at him as
one of the most favored presidents ever. I guess that shows you that people in
our nation love to love the tragic stories, all the dead heroes. Personally,
whether Bill did or did not do this; and we all now know he did; doesn't
really effect his job. Look at all the people running fortune 500 companies
who are probably fooling around on their wives. Do they deserve to loose their
jobs? Do they deserve to loose the privacy of life that we all cherish, the
freedom of decision that we all have. I, personally regret some of my sexual
actions, and I most certainly don't want them drug out onto network
television. You know, the press is also not the most truthful way to get all
the information that we need.

mtnbear1@aol.com

i'm not american, so i hope that i don't tell any shit :-)

the americans ain't got the right to know the private life of their
president...i don't want my neighbour to know my sexlife too, of course :-)
...look at the famous president JFK....he had many many many (sexual)
relationships...and abe lincoln himself would throw kenneth starr and the
whole puritan perverts out of the window ;-)

here in europe, many politicians can't understand people like kenneth starr...
gee, it's the president's sexlife..not the sexlife of the americans ...

peace,
wolli

i feel sorry for him. ken starr must yearn for the days of the holy inquisition
when adultery was punishable by death, regardless of the innocence of the
accused. so Clinton had an affair. so what? everyone knows kennedy had dozens
of lovers - did it affect his ability to do his job as president? thomas
jefferson was notorious for his conquests, and george washington was one of
the biggest studs in society at one time - were they worse presidents for it?
and really, whose business is it if Clinton - or anyone for that matter - has
an affair? and as for this "lying" business that Clinton is being charged with
-- to quote samuel l. jackson on the tonight show recently --

"what does it matter if he chose not to answer a question no one had any
business asking in the first place?"

it is a sad world when people can ignore the poor, the sick, the homeless, and
our mother earth to focus on the sex life of one man -  a lonely man who now
must face the destuction of his family, reputation, and friends by the
selfish, self-righteous, bible-banging starr. i pity him, and i would not want
to be in his place for all the ganja in the world [ok, maybe not :)].

I think President Clinton is still alright. Everyone makes mistakes,
that's why they put erasers on pencils, it's his own personal life and it
should be between him and only who he wants it to be with. I just think
it is up to Hilary now!

I believe Clinton should resign...he is a joke to the world and the American people. The President is obviously mentally ill and I certainly don't feel comfortable having him in office

To coin a phrase I think he SUCKS. But only cigars!!!

KEEP SMILING :->

ANDREW  &  ADELE

he's cool

I think that the President has his own life and he and Hillary need to
do their husband and wife thing together and in private, but he is a
crazy, sick dude to get head while he is doing president work.(like
talking to other countries on the phone during it.)
Craziness!

I would almost like the president to be impeached so Al Gore can get a
shot at being president. He's an enviromentalist against war. I don't
neccessarily think that Clinton deserves to prosecuted due to a sex
scandal, but personally, i don't agree with his views. Plus, I don't
think al would get elected unless he can show what he can do in the
limelight.

What can the old hippies teach the young hippies?
Bravery.  Part of the reason those who today cherish and wish to strive
towards the ideals held by the original hippies do not do so is fear.
We are afraid of losing what we already have (despite those, for the
most part, being placebos for true satisfaction with our existence, ie
parental favor, meaningless jobs, good credit, etc.).  We are afraid of
the daunting hurdles looming ahead of us, like egomaniacal partisan
politicians, periods of discomfort, possible incarceration and
bulletheads who refuse to even open themselves to other possibilities.
But most of all, we are afraid of ourselves.  We fear we're not good
enough ourselves to have the impunity to tell others how to change.  We
fear that we aren't strong enough to last through the hard journey
ahead, steadfast to what we know in our hearts to be true.  We fear that
we are destined to become materialistic, careerist personal
disappointments like our parents who once thought the same.  But worst
of all, we fear success; we may discover what we always wanted is worse
than the charade we call life now.  Careful what you wish for...

So we need an old hippy, and sorry, just because you still have a
ponytail and were at Woodstock and smoke a jay when the kids are away,
that doesn't qualify.  I mean someone who's made a life for themselves
yet stuck firm to their beliefs.  They must be able to lead by example,
with both responsibility and conviction.  A BRAVE hippy.  And if he or
she can't or won't lead the rest of us, one of us must be taught to
stand in their stead.  A humble celebrity (if that's not too much of an
oxymoron) who can inspire people to act without malice in the best
tradition of civil disobedience.  Light the fires in our bellies, so we
know, without a doubt, that the time is NOW.

I think the oldies need to teach the young ones how to have a stress free
life well as much as is possible anway. Young ones are put under too much
pressure these days and they are all dying because of it. Teach our young
hippies to relax follow there dreams but not to kill them selves in the
process hey sometimes if it doesnt happen it was not meant to be life is
what is impotant .Chill out is my theme.

The old hippies need to like,  teach the young hippies, the whole younger generation man, to love and accept all those you meet man, even those that are cruel to you, you gotta keep on loving, that's what makes us so different from others, it's not the clothes, or the hair man, it's the attitude and the realization that we are all the same inside

old hippies can teach the news hippies truly how to live.  To respect
and love the earth we walk on, the people we live with, and the life we
all live.  To rebel aginst what is just not right.

With the goal in mind of being able to 'be here now', read much Zen, study much Native American spirituality, spend as much time as possible outdoors, get rid of material stuff, keep that which is truly meaningful and transportive.  Calm the mind, calm the mind, calm the mind...meditation is invaluable.  Accept change.  Love one another.  Love, Laurie

They can teach us ...  how to get high without drugs... i saw somethin' like that on woodstock how to not to do the same mistakes they did and how to be better in general!

the older hippies can teach us younger ones to love more and come together.  we need to enjoy life and become one with everyone.

No matter what has happened throughout all these years and all the
things that were quested after or sought for even questioned; it all
boils down to simplicity:  Love your neighbor as yourself; though it's
Jesus' commandent it still applies to each and everyone; for the one
message that rang true from way back when was simply, love.  If you
love, you love people and things and when in love you appreciate and
build up; never to destroy or hurt: and what you do is to help and
create and do the acts in all accord; not in selfish want but living for
the other whether it would be a person or a tree.  Good luck with your
site--

i think that hippies could teach young people how to live in peace and harmony...they could also teach young people how to get in touch with their inner self...                             -Laura

Teach the children about the Utopian ideal—
This is not all about being stoned, its about new consciousness, and
that need not be only through chemestry.
New consciousness= new methods= new world

Try to do it with love.
Try to do it with your heart.
You can´t?
Try it with some ganja and Jimi Hendrix

old hippies can teach the younger generation of hippies exactly how it
was back in the 60's. the vibes that were around back then just arent
here today, and young hippies need to know what is was like.
keep the movement going !

-peace and love to the world   :)

I think there is lots that old hippies can teach young hippies,
especially the lessons they have learned along the way as they tried to
make the world better.  But, I think the biggest challenge in trying to
teach us young hippies might be getting us to let go of our
independence, just a little.  I think we young hippies have fought so
hard to be independent that we are reluctant to seek help from anyone.
I know I have a hard time accepting help from people because I'm
stubbornly independent.  It may well be the young hippy's "tragic flaw".

How tight to load the bowl!

Drugs are BAD!!!!    JUST LOOK AT ME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!   THAT's WHAT HAPPENS WHEN YOU DO DRUGs!

Should the U.S. or Nato send troops to Kosovo?

Although I cannot condone violence of any kind, I can't see any peaceful
solution for Kosovo in the near future. As long as the war goes on, the
lives of innocent children and adults will be threatened and as we have
already seen, taken. The people of Kosovo do not have the means to withstand
this attack on them, so therefore I think that troops of any kind possible
should be sent out to help. If the matter cannot be solved peacefully, then
surely we must choose the lives of the innocent over vicious killers,

Best regards

Anita Hennessy.

NO!  war is not healthy for children and other living things...

make love not war...

peace

NO troops should be sent to the problem spots in the Balkans.
The United States (although it posesses the power to become and to some
degree, already is) should not be a global police force. World peace is
something we all long for, but can never really achieve. Strife between
peoples is something that is instilled in the human race. The US is
trying to fix other peoples' problems when there are COUNTLESS problems
here at home. I think that the US gov't as well as other world powers
are not focusing on their own internal conflicts, and trying to be
heroes in other countries. How can we attempt to clean our neighbor's
house when our own is overflowing with filth ??

NO....do you see that? for the first time i have used caps, this answer
deserves caps.  while the u.s. goverment may believe it is capable of
assisting others beyond their national boundaries, they are sadly
mistaken! at this point in the government's period of growth, they lack
the major criterion of both utilitarianism and triage. although the
thought of attending to other's conditions is rather generous, the u.s.
must first take a national standpoint and look internally, repairing the
problems at home before looking globally. in this manner they are able
to acheive a healthier globe through their healthier nation. the u.s. is
comparable to, say, a leg or an arm on the body of the globe. if that
body part is in top condition, it is better capable to aid other parts.
because of this string of thought, i would like to reinforce that the
national achieves the global inherently.

In a word Yes.

The potential exists for a conflict in the Balkans which could seriously
undermine the US's interests in the region. A war could spill over into
neighbouring countries such as Greece and Albania. This could affect the
European Union and Eastern Europe. Home of America's trading & NATO partners
and centres of huge US investment.

The USA - for right or wrong - took the position of world policeman when
Saddam invaded Kuwait. Cynics at the time said their reasons were more to do
with wanting cheap gas rather than being mad at the invasion!
The US has already set a precedent for intervention. The European Union
should - here I would agree with the US isolationists - take the lead in
sorting out the problem. However, given that they really agree on anything
it will probably once again require decisive US action to bring a speedy
result.

The US and NATO's role would be that a peace keeping and monitoring force
anyway. No one is suggesting that the US and NATO take on the Yugoslav (ie.
Serbian & Montenegro army - 4th largest in Europ) miltary. Russia has a lot
of cultural ties to the Serbs. And they would not stand back and let their
cousin get beat up............

For many years the majority of the ethnic Albanians in the region have
suffered Stalinest oppression at the hands of the Serbs. Now the Serbs are
repeating the madness they committed in the war against their other
neighbours Croatia and Bosnia.

The world has seen the first episode. do we have to watch the next
installment of genocide Serbian style or should we try and stop it now?

I feel that being a hippy station the question should be why sholdn't we
send troops where they are not wanted.  Remember the Vietnam war.  Many
civilians were killed and what for?  To stop the spread of communism.
Why were troops sent over to sought others out when the Vietnamese
wanted communism?  It was an embarressment I believe to go overseas and
LOOSE the war against others who weren't as onto it in weapons as the
Western World.  My answer: DO NOT SEND TROOPS WHERE THEY ARE NOT WANTED.
Love and Peace!!
Hippies for EVER.

Well, I think the USA should send troops to Kosovo. That is the only way the war will stop. Or maybe not. Maybe there is another way, why don't they just talk and solve the problems if there are any problems at all. I live in Slovenia and so I am close to that country. But I don't know exactly what is going on there, I just know there is war like in Bosnia before. I just don't know why are wars in the world, there is nothing good about it, not a one thing, just people are dying and such things...

well that's all I have to say about this question.

Ajda (strange name, right?)

I feel America needs to start caring about itself, not other countries. Why can't America fight against deforestation, or poverty, why is it necessary to get Americans killed for something we don't belong in.
The American government needs to realize the true problems their facing. Deep down, Americans know their wars aren't for just reasons, but for a pig on capital hill to get paid.

that problem over there... bos companeros born in the war- viva el

YES, absolutely (US and Europe)

NO WAR MAN!!! It might be a threat to start something!! Just because
Americans are so called "Higher ranked" then other countries that
doesn't mean we have to abuse our power. We should try to solve it in a
more mature manner.  BIG UPS TO CLINTON FOR GOING TO CHINA TO HELP HUMAN
RIGHTS!! WE ARE ALL BROTHERS AND  SISTERS LIVING IN THIS CREATED WORLD!!

Hi,
I know war is bad and stuff. But thats the only way they can get over it,
with help. It feels a bit same as the Vietnam´s war, but...I dunno! What
should I answer? If I asnwer "yeah!" it is partly good, but olso baf. If I
answer "nay" it´s all the same... Bad question.

I don't even know the situation in Kosovo, so maybe a cop-out would be to call
me ignorant. But I can tell you that anything involving troops should be
avoided at almost all costs

no way man they should keep them home enough is enough

that would be a big no! Some things we really should stay out of.
What are the possible dangers of genetic engineering?

the dangers of genetic engineering are too few to mention.  After taking a
course in genetics, I realised  the extent to which people could have their
identification and individuality removed from them without their will.  As
a result of genetic engineering, the world will become an unnatural clone
factory despised by nature.  There will be no individuals, and finding a
human with individual qualities will be hard enough to find let alone find
a person with not-so-high cheekbones.  It has been proposed that by the
punctuated equilibrium theory of evolution, it was genetic mutations that
spread to result in the "civilised" society we have become today.  With
genetic engineering, these future changing mutations will be completely
wiped out, and we will remain as we are today for the rest of eternity
until we wipe ourselves out with our technological "sophistication".  LET
NATURE DO ITS WORK-IT HAS A PURPOSE FOR EVERYONE!!!

i think that genetic engineering is dangerous because we are interfering
with the way things are made, living things.  there has to be
consequences for playing god like that.

Don't even want to think about it...The times they are a changin'.More
perfect people, just what we need. Maybe its not such a bad idea with all
the diseases and etc...., Can greed and hatred be genetically deleted?
THAT'S COOL!!!!

The dangers of Genetic engineering is that they might mess up a gene
or two and make a person like the humpback of notre dame and possibly even
deform that even more by trying to improve it, the person they copy might
not be right because he/she might be a carbon copy of hitler and in due time
make a world war 3 or something like that.  Technology should not mess with
nature, its unsanitary.

Before the potato famine, they only grew one species of potato in all of
Ireland. get it?  Genetics must evolve. If you have a million cloned
cows, and one gets sick, the odds are that the entire million will also
get sick.
Clone Jerry Garcia, then destroy the technology.

What are the dangers of genetic engineering?  Where do I start?  Genetic
engineering is of course the process of taking something that is natural, and
should be considered beautiful and twisting and contorting and sacrificing it
for the benefit of the people who are doing it.  Unless they can use genetic
engineering to cure our loved ones who are slowly dying of diseases (that may
have a cure lying in the rainforest which they too are destroying for their
own greedy malice), then it is completely without a doubt wrong.  When we stop
letting animals and plants develop as they were made to and start changing
them for our greed, then what is left sacred?  Certainly not the respect for
all that is natural and the beauty of life in general.  Where will this
genetic engineering stop?  Will they soon be engineering the children of our
peers to be perfect in every way?  How is that different from the goal of
Hitler (if you take out his satanic murderous plan to kill the Jews and
whoever else was not "perfect" in his twisted mind)?

Peace

Because it is such a powerful conflict between a question of science and
different moral views attained from past reasoning, there is bound to be
an angry aftermath towards the knowledge science can gain about the way
things truly are instead of people's mythological reasoning of events.

The main danger of genetic engineering is the awesome power that it affords to minds and hands that are too finite and myopic to use it wisely.  Eric Back, Pastor, Chandler Christian Life Church Chandler AZ.

I know that all the scientists are saying that genetic engineering
will one day be beneficial by allowing organ harvesting, etc. However,
unfortunately, the people of this earth have never been good with
self-control, and have always gotten things way out of hand. If we allow
genetic engineering to go on, we will bring unloved, unwanted and
confused clones and test tube babies and mutants onto this already
unloving world. Maybe they will fullfil our purposes, but isn't that so
selfish? These are living people we are talking about! Imagine the poor
child that will have to grow up knowing he has no parents, he's not
real, he was made in a laboratory by money greedy specialists!!! If the
value of a human life hasn't already been degenerated, then this will
definitely be the final blow.

Somewhere some dictator will try and develop the "perfect race" again.
Remember Hitler?

say no to genetic engineering!!!! while genetic engineering may help us conquer diseases such as aids and cancer, it could also grow out of hand and alter our earth.  some people say it is human nature to expand and grow, and i agree totally!  but we must also realize that human nature and instinct has not always been a good thing.  where are we gonna put all these genetically engineered mutants that we are going to create?? maybe disease is a way of keeping our population down.  why do we want to mess with nature?? i think we should start going back to nature, not find other ways to alter it!!! write me back at: melissad16@hotmail.com

This is a frightening idea, say with Jesus, what if some of those relics
actually did have some DNA of his on them? Assuming now, that it is true he
could have been divine, what kind of soul would reside in his body? Would that
be the second coming? ewe weird.
Now you could say that we are all God and therefore have within us the power
of creation, and i would agree. But doing this outside of the realm of chance
and love is a pretty frightening idea.
love and i hope you feel happy anyway,
bean

first of all, genetic engineering was not meant to be.  people shouldn't have
the power or the right to make a person the way THEY want it to be. the
miracle of birth is that everyone is different, and we don't know how a life
will ever turn out, because that is not up to us.  to decide someone's life
for them, is completely wrong, and does pose much danger. would you like to be
walking around with another clone of yourself? would you like the whole world
to know how you think, and feel, and what diseases you are prone to? plus, do
we want the government knowing that kind of stuff? i think it could possibly
end in the governments turning their people into zombies that they can use to
fight for them. if they can make a person, to fit their perfect mold of a
soldier, or fighter, or what have you....they can use people like machines to
do as they please. many governments all over the world have too much control
already...do we want to let them have more?

So the children found dads tool kit and decided to rebuild the house. well if god made it all and we are created in his image, that kinda says it all. but the real question is what will the little children do with it and will it be for the better or the worse??  like my dad always said if its not broken DON'T TRY and fix it cuz the chance's are you don't know what you are doing anyway.  FunBoy  peace
where do you begin?? well first of all once we knew it was possible what kinds
of things would people want to do?? would hitler ideals come back??and once
people could genetically engineer unborn children (which is a crime unto
itself )would there be even more grounds for prejudice and "racism"? i think the
thought of a perfect people is horrendue-um bad. no matter what would come of
it. because Mother Earth knows what she's doing

High ya Hipp....
my answer to the Q. is that with all the medical break throughs that could
be made possible with genetic engineering, the risks or dangers that
could arise are incomparable to the wonders and benefits.]
So, I guess my answer is that the dangers are far less then the
unremarkable  advancements that this would bring....
Just think one day no life threatening diseases.....
Wow what a thought!!!!

Love,
Kiwi_Kitty
A.K.A. Nicci

the danger could be great such as prejudice against the ungenetically
enhanced people (like in the movie Gataca)(I recommend it)but with all
great disoveries comes problems as well, such as the space shuttle blowing
up we just cant call it quits we must continue to better the human race
and provide an existence that will last out the earth. WE MUST SURVIVE!!

Do the nuclear tests in India and Pakistan presage another arms race, or worse?
I do believe that it will be worse than " our " cold war era for the simple
reason that when we were in the arms race you had the non- God fearing
Soviets ( Religion was pretty much frown upon by the state ) and the
fanatical hyper Christian American state.
One ( the USSR ) had intelligence enough to not push the button , and the
other would not destroy the earth because that was totally against their
religious doctrine. ( they would rather send all the hippies to S.E.Asia to
either get their heads blown off by the thousands, or come back even more
psychologically impaired than they would have been if they stayed here
tripping on acid for the duration of the war.)
THIS TIME , you are watching two countries that have ACTUALLY fought each
other many times in the recent past ( five times in twenty years I have
read. ) and are fundamental religious enemies . Not only is India extremely
over populated but I believe that they have figured out that one great way
to prop up your economy and put the masses to work is to fight your
neighbour. Pakistan on the other hand is an Islamic nation that believes
that the border war that is going on with India is a JIHAD. A holy war
that is directly inspired by Allah.
Now these are only my perceptions , leeched from what I have seen  and
heard from various individuals that are of Indian and Pakistani. Whether
they are correct I do not know , but folks I believe that soon the time will
come that some idiot WILL push the button , and I read that
Nostradamus had predicted that as where the great fire was to come from ,
but you have to think more closely on  Israel, Jordan, Egypt and coming
soon to a missile bay near you Iraq. that’s just my 2 cents . and that's all
it's worth
      BILL HOLDER

It saddens me that the country that gave us Mahatma Gandhi is testing
nuclear weapons.  My first reaction was "haven't we learned anything
from the Cold War?".  But then I tried to imagine what would drive India
and Pakistan to do these tests.  Certainly, there has been extreme
bitterness between them for many years - but why nuclear??  If it really
was JUST about their territorial disputes, wouldn't they threaten to
smash each other with conventional means first?  If you're going to
"rattle sabers", there's no need to take out the granddaddy weapon of
them all right off the bat.  There's something bigger going on here that
I haven't been able to figure out yet.

The other thing that strikes me about this whole affair, is that in the
historical big picture, the US became a super-power riding on the back
of big-ass nuclear arsenal.  Now it's taking the high and mighty road,
saying how unacceptable nuclear testing is and using the power it's
acquired to quash anyone who tries it.  Although I support their efforts
in stopping nuclear tests, it worries me that we're going to see a
backlash from less developed countries.

Despite all this, I remain optimistic that our spirit will overcome this
foolishness somehow.  I join in with others who have predicted that
something beyond our imagining is going to happen soon to make this kind
of stuff irrelevant.

Mike

If this question were phrased "Do the Nuclear tests done by the Hindus
and the Moslems presage..." the question would be more honest.  If the
conflict in the Balkans was described by the media as a struggle between
the roman Catholics, the Greek Orthodox Church, the Lutheran church and
the Moslems, it would be honest.  My point is, all wars are religious.
A new Arms race?  Yeah, by definition.  Will they use them on each
other? I don't care. A few million less, a little fallout, and the world
will be a better place.  There are too many people.  The earth needs to
shrug off at least two billion humans in order to make it another couple
of generations.  The plaque in Europe served that purpose.  If there had
been no plaque, there would be as many Europeans as there are Indians
and Chinese.  The WWI and WWII served to put another growth limit on
Europe.
Heh, yeah, I'm an old hippie, peace love and all, but just try to deny
the truths I put out here.  You will not be able to.

Yes. It is scary considering the violent history between Hindus and Muslims over the centuries.

Oh man, heck yes!

Unless something is done, unless both Countries are willing to sit down
and talk about what going the negative vibes between them, I can only
imagine what will happen from this.
India's one folly, this blasting of the bombs, can only make other Third
up and coming world countries may want to do the same w/ their enemies.
We have to make sure others aren't thinking like this and make sure they
know the fruits of their actions will only bring sorrow.

I only hope nothing else happens from the irresponsitiveness of both
India and Pakistan.

Praying for world peace...w/ more intensity,
Two Rainbows

Everyone is talking about the new millenium , " A new beginning" for the
atheist , maybe "The Armageddon" for the religious....whoever you put
your faith in the year 2000 will arrive and when I does it will be the
biggest party of all time...I do not see the new millenium coming...Oh yes
it will arrive but it should be re-named , "The Nuclear Era". The state of
the world looks safe enough on the surface but break through that and the
corrupt vile truth will rear its ugly head for all to see, we are entering
into the next century with hopes and fears that our lives will be good and
the world will treat us right . It is as plain as the sun in the sky that
none of this will matter in a short time.
The Armageddon (Jesus returns to lay the cards on the table) is not too
from the truth , it wont be Jesus that will be our downfall though....Even
if he was coming to destroy us it wont matter...Humanity will get there
a long time before him...
Look around, India - 5 nuclear tests , Pakistan - 6 nuclear
tests....Despite what the world thinks they are not the only countries that will be
entering the Nuclear Era....God only knows who else is planning to "convert". One
country sees another making nuclear weapons and thinks..."If I don’t start
making a more powerful weapon than them then surely I will perish , so
they take the nuclear step towards self-destruction , its the basic cause and
effect situation...No country is safe from it as I’m sure we will all see
in the few years to come.  It seems to me that no-one is REALLY taking in the
actual picture that is going on here , but I’m sure that when a few more
countries "convert" everyone will stand up and pay attention.
However......
The end of life as we know it may be near but should we be cursing and
angry and bitter at humanity’s weakpoint (self destruction) ???What will that
prove?
I have a different concept , I find myself living in the year 1998 and I’m
sure I'll see a few more to come, but my mind wanders and I find myself thinking
of the hundreds upon hundreds of billions of people that have died before me,
they - never knowing anything of nuclear warfare , they - never having
anything to do with the end of the world and it amazes me that we have come this
far.
When the end does come it will be a proud day (that’s right a proud day)
for all living to see it.... only hampered by the knowledge that it was humanity
that killed it . For the few billion people who are alive will witness
something that will never ever be seen again - The end of the world , what could
possibly be more entertaining than that??! And when all life is dead on this Earth
will the forever expanding Universe still be there or will it cease to be ,
because there will be no-one to see it??

It is very sad when human-kind fills its life with material possessions
to keep inside their own safe little world and we all forget that the
most materialistic thing of all is life itself........................

This shit scares the hell outa me. I was born in the 50's, the nuclear forces
then seemed to
know the consequences. These fuckin' idiots (oops sorry) should think about
the rest of
the world. Invite them all to MagnoliaFest '98 @ Live Oak Florida .  I'll be

me and
said HI.

Yes and it is Bill Clinton's fault.

Now that India and Pakistan have nuclear bombs, everyone else is going to start making them to "protect" themselves from each other. After going through all that work making the bombs, testing them, etc. They will be looking for an excuse to use them so they won't feel like they've wasted all their time and money.  I could be wrong about this, but it looks to me like we're headed strait for "World War 3."  At least we have something to protest about now.

Can't really figure this one out...Two countries that cant feed their
people..WHAT????  Lives are too expendable globally speaking....

Actually, the explosions were a source of pride.  Each nation stated in
its own way that it will not accept worldwide American hegemony.
Although it was a horrible way to achieve equality; now a Moslem nation
can say it has a power previously reserved for non-Moslems.  The end to
the nuclear nightmare is in the hands of America.  But our culture is
too much controlled imperialists.

Do I sense the ever growing evidence of Armageddon soon?  Maybe I do......

Not necessarily. If the US government handles this the right way, this
would all be over. Unfortunately the government is panicking, which will
only make it worse. I truly believe that the US, one of the central
powers of the world, should set an example for others. Maybe if they
would stop testing bombs maybe everyone else would slowly too. Remember
that after we dropped the two atomic bombs in Japan, all the other
countries started making their own. If the government does not take
actions to stop this, it will inevitably escalate to another arms race.
Remember spread the peace.

If Pakistan and India keep up with all this bomb stuff we're all going
to be blown clean off the planet

Whenever human beings are operating out of ego (no matter where they
are-or which tribe
they belong to) and wielding nuclear weapons,
the rest of us had better take a long hard look.
We all know the "I'LL SHOW YOU" attitude only too well. How many times
can the world go through nuclear arms races before one tired, frightened
fool makes a mistake? IT ONLY TAKES ONE... And then who knows?

What are the most pressing ecological issues facing the world in the year 2000?

The most ecological problems, I think will be the problem of cutting down
our trees.  It is so horrible to cut down the trees especially when we don't
really need all we cut. Its just hurting them and stupid people wont stop.
Plus, trees give us oxygen. So do other plants, but trees are around a lot
longer. Lots of animals can and do die too because their homes are taken
away. That's just one of the problems.
Peace,
Shannon

Tough question. But really if you think about it, the #1 issue (in my
mind) feeding the planet. Whether or not the earth is capable of
producing enough food for everyone. But there are so many different
issues that need to be taken care of like homelessness, poverty, global
warming, pollution, disinigration of forests, corrosion of the soil,
war.... Anyone who was affected by El Nino will know about the
disasters. Is this just the first of many more to come? Or can we as a
planet come together and fight back?  I believe the Doors said it best:
"The time to hesitate is through"

i believe that we are killing off all the millions of species to make room
for us, our livestock, and our very few crops.  we need to stop for a while
and learn more about the undisturbed areas and all the treasures they may
hold.  time is going fast,  and we are far away from social change,  so all
i can say is do your part. don't use harmful chemicals that can find their
way into the water and kill our precious marine life,  don't contribute to
the meat industry, cotton industry, or imported orange industry ( to name a
few ) because of their depletion of the forested areas and the depletion of
the soil's nutrients needed for new growth by chemical sprays. learn more
about what to avoid to make you ecologically friendly :)

The pressing issues of 2000.......
Hmm, that's a tough one to sum up as a wildlife conservation major. The
extinction of one species a day in the rain forest constitutes as pressing
to me personally. By the way it's a documented fact that biologists have
been examining insects from tree canopy; also rain forest derived, and over
20% are unknown species. Disgusting.

Take care,
                Lonnie

The most pressing issues of this world is the exploding population. By
the year 2030 this earth's population will 9,000,000,000 (nine billion).
That is a lot of hungry mouths to feed. We can't even feed the 6 billion
of that live on the planet now, what possibly can we do in the future.
If something drastic isn't done very soon a lot of people will soon die.

I believe that we should stop concentrating so much on ourselves and spend
more time trying to clean up Mother Earth.  I mean really, I am 16, and my
high school spends a lot of money each year on programs to stop kids from
doing drugs and drinking.  Give me a break.  I think these programs are a
waste of time and money.  We worry too much about ourselves instead of what
we are doing to the wonderful nature that supports us, that keeps us alive,
earth.  Can't people see that if we continue to kill the earth that we are
going to kill ourselves that much quicker?  I live in Illinois, so I am
surrounded by farmers and fields.  You want to talk about substance
abusers, look at farmers.  Did you know that farmers are responsible for
polluting 75% of our water?  They spray so many pesticides on the soil,
it's unreal.  Don't they see that they are ruining our soil, killing plants
and animals, and contaminating bodies of water?  What about deforestation,
and the rainforest?  There's another huge economic problem.  Methane from
millions of cars produces acid rain.........I've seen people that drive,
I'm not kidding you, DRIVE two blocks to get to school each day.  You know
how much pollution we'd be saving if we all just walked?  The message I'm
trying to get across is.....think before you toss some hazardous substance
into our soil....think before you pollute the earth.  If we don't clean up
our act, man will there be some heavy consequences.
Peace and Love,
Emily

The single greatest problem is rotting 55 gallon drums.
The selection of chemicals "safely" disposed of, using these drums are dumped
into every climate, ecosystem, caustic environment on earth and remain hidden
just long enough for the persons responsible to die off or retire, thus
leaving few punishable for this crime.

I think the groovy OZONE-LAYER is going to be gone man!! Let us all die in Harmony and Peace.  SEX& DRUGS, As long as they are still here the world will always live in peace dude!! Love you mannnnnn!!!!!

This question is not so easy to answer as all ecological problems are very important.

But generally I think the biggest problem is the rapidly grooving population on the planet with no alternative resources of energy - most resources we are using are just not recyclable - especially gas products.

As it was said in one of very good sci-fi novels:

There are 4 steps of civilization:
1. Natural money
2. Monetarical money
3. Information / Informatical money
4. Energy / Energetical money

First you change the nuts, apples or milk for furies, meat or boots.
Intermezzo - instead of using naturals you start to use also some natural, but not neccesary for living - pieces of gold, silver...
Second you change the nuts, apples or milk for gold,silver... and then the gold,silver... for furies, meat, boots.
Intermezzo - insteadof using gold you start to use the also first information - paper money.
Third you change the nuts, apples or milk for paper with no value in natural, but value in information and also for the monettes made by no value metals etc...
Intermezzo - instead using the paper money you start to use high information technologie - credit cards.
Fourth step - you change anything not for the information held in your credit card, but for energetical value of these impulses, sent from one to other - era of energetical trade.

And now we are behind the gates to world, where the biggest value is the energetical impulse...

So - search up new resources of energy !

A propos - has anybody been thinking about the fact that all trees are grooving every spring a thousand of miniaturical solar baterries - leaves ?

Peace out there - I hope we will be able to care about our Mother Earth when we will be able to stand up on our feet and fly out from the nest exploring the Universe.

OVERPOPULATION
DEFORESTATION

I think major concerns will be:  the extreme amount of human population, the computer thing(know what i mean??), the state that we are leaving the earth in,  a realization that the world needs to be run in a much more natural, peaceful way...basically i think that we are heading(if not in already) towards a time of major chaos, and major soul searching--also i think we are entering a time of major changes in spirituallity

there are so many devistating ecological issues that this world should
be terrified about.  the destruction of nature is occurring every where,
and as hard as people fight and fight to preserve our land, people are
moving faster and faster to tear the homes of wild life and destroy
tranquilty to build business and corporations to build a bigger and
better america. an bigger and better world, but is it better? are we
becoming more advanced or more ignorant ? how long will it take our
mother to heal from the wounds and gashes humans have torn in her side?
the production of nucular war fare, a scary scary thought that at just a
push of a button the world as we know it can be forever changed and
forever nonexsistent.  i wonder if the future will come along the lines
as ....as.... terminater II.  and lastley in my preaching, the smog that
i breath in the air filled with pollutents and filth is all created by
man, and our progress, is anything being done about it,  ya there is but
still it really sucks, and i don't think any efforts for the survival of
our planet are moving fast enough, if only the sides were reversed and
there were more nurturers and healers and less styrophome consuming,
carbon monoxcide exhailing, materialistic, think that it is ok to throw
their trash on the side of the road and use alot of nucular energy to
saute their spam and watch there favorite reruns of mamas family, then
the world would be on such a better track.  but i pray to what ever
higher power there is if one does infact exsist that everything will see
the light before it is to late to reverse the effects that the planet is
enduring.  and that is the end of my sermon. please exuse any spelling
errors that may have accumulated

i have to say one of the most pressing issues facing the 21st century is the
destruction of the rainforests.  people just don't seem to have any respect
