Which is worse: Bombing Iraq or letting Saddam keep weapons of mass destruction?
Which hippy ideals are most needed today?
Do you have to do drugs to be a hippie?
What have hippies done to help the Earth's environment?
In what ways are younger hippies different from the hippies of the 60's & 70's?
Do you think hippies are still a potent social force?
Which hippie do you admire most and why?
What is the most important issue facing hippies today?

Which is worse: Bombing Iraq or letting Saddam keep weapons of mass destruction?

I sincerely hope it doesn't come down to this decision. I believe that our
Gov. is trying to avoid bombing them, but I think that if it comes down to it,
we need to make sure that Iraq is not hiding the type of weapons our officials
think they are. I think Saddam is crazy, he has used these weapons before, he
has used them on his own people, and he is a threat. In order to keep peace,
we must make sure that this man is not lying (if he weren't, wouldn't he be
happy to prove his peaceful intentions?). This man couldn't care less about
"peace", and that is extremely dangerous to all of us. Iraq needs to abide by
the deal he made, and our Country needs to make sure that we are all safe from
this maniac;, so yes, even though I truly wish war, hatred, poverty, racism
and cruelty didn't exist, it does, and we have to keep strong in this world of
barbarism.
Babe

Well...that depends....which is worse...bombing the United States or
letting Clinton keep weapons of mass destruction?

Although the thought is present in all of our minds, and there really is no
need for me to even bother saying so...I will anyway...It would be absolutely
showering my heart with every ray of sunlight and warmth if we destroyed all
harmfull tools of destruction. Though this will never happen within my
lifetime, it's still a warm thought.
Anyhew, naturally there is widespread fear that if we dont shoot first...will
they? And naturally, being the lover of all life, I as well am in fear for the
loss we would take. I would also feel the same deal of remorse for the people
of Iraq if we shot first...or at all. I have no hate for the people of Iraq,
and have all the love I can give for my American peirs. I do not think we
should bomb Iraq for the simple security of America's weary mind, nor do I
think we should leave Iraq without servailence for less than a second. They
know about  the fire-power, the trigger happy government, and the amount of
power the U.S. has. I'm proud of my country. It's not her fault the people
that walk about her destroy her without realizing, taking advantage of her.
After all she's seen and survived she still gives to us. A love that strong
only deserves some love in return. We need to silently unite. Our rallys being
the constant flow of mail to our government officials. The cats in the
whitehouse dont speak for me...I have ideas and sollutions of my own, and im
sure you do as well! Who knows...you just may save the world :)

Forcing one's own ego upon another is clearly undesirable.
Both sides are clearly treading down the wrong path and have missed
the true way.
The point that the question is dualistic shows a lack of understanding
of nature.
The question isn't between bombing one or letting another build
weapons.
The question is why each government feels the need to force its will
upon the other.
This shows why they feel the need for weapons in the first place.
Unless both parties entreat upon a different path, destruction is
eminent.
It matters not who destroys who.  On an absolute scale it's all the
same.
If there are no threats, the need for the weapons disappears.
If they travel the way, embracing all with nothing to hide, there is
no need of forcing one will over another.
This is what happens when those who have lost sight of the true way
are given charge over the course of events.

I think that both are equally horrible. Bombing Iraq with the
innocent children and people who really want no part of war, and
keeping weapons of destruction are horrible. Sadaam Hussein is a
madman. keeping any arsenal of weapons in the hands of a madman is
obviously a horrifyingly dangerous situation for all of mankind.
thats like Hitler keeping an arsenal of weapons of mass destruction
available. It really is a "Catch 22" situation.!!!!                My

The WORST thing is that we all have the guns, bombs, weapons ...

But to the actual question - if everybody would use the weapon just for the defense there would be no wars at all - if everybody is the defender, there is NO attacker. Hopelessly the world is not like this and there are still the attackers...
BUT !!
THERE IS ALWAYS A WAY TO GET OFF THE PROBLEM WITHOUT USING THE GUNS !!!

Roll on the diplomacy (what the hell we are paying our diplomats if not for this ), search the way - nobody wants to die and I believe that really nobody wants to kill.

The real answer is neither of the alternatives given,
but each side gaining understanding and finding the true way.

This whole Iraq situation is very similar to the Iran-Contra affair in
1979-80 and the invasion of Panama in 1989.  Both of these operations
were kept secret from the people of the United States, and the
information that did get through was highly watered down and
inaccurate.  Remeber the trials of Oliver North and some suspicion about
George Bush and the CIA?  What I am afraid of is that these happenings
in Iraq are the same things.  Do we know the truth?  No.  That's what
bothers me, not Saddam or the Bomb.

Actually, the question is a paradox. Wherin 2 wrongs don't make a right
no matter what the justification of the final out come. I have no doubt
that Saddam will, if given the oppertunity eventually use his weapons to
destroy all the life he can on planet earth. Yet our bombing of Iraq and
killing innocents is not really a viable answer either. However there is
an answer.

If the our government would just quit pretending that they have no
clandestine resources, and just send some one in to assasinate him, Then
you only have one evil instead of many.

I personally think that it is an increadbly horrible thing to even
think about bombing Iraq because of the possabilities of war and the
loss of the lives of our brothers and sisters.  You also must consider
the fact that they believe that people other than themselves(Muslums)
are inferior and should be destroyed.  On the other hand letting them
keep the weapons would leave the possibilities of the loss of our own
(American Hippies)
lives and there for there wouldn't be as many to support the idea of
world peace and the love for one another.  In some ways I believe that
this is a test to see if we really have as much fath as we think.  So,
you tell me which is worse?

I feel the only time one may deploy weapons against another state is in
self defense.  Because Saddam HAS weapons, it doesn't mean he has USED
them.  It would, of course, be the best case scenario if a united world
front could persuade Saddam to disarm.  But it is naive to assume that many
other countries, certainly including the US, don't also have this type of
weapon...call me a cynic, but that's what I think...so why single out
Saddam to disarm?  War sucks, but like I tell my son, hitting first is not
acceptable, but defending yourself or your own is imperative.  Let us not
cast the first stone.   Laurie, ex-Oak Street panhandle chick

I vote no to going to Iraq only for purpose. Why is this more important than
freeing Tibet?

Its worse to let that ass live, let alone bomb him!
Nuke the S.O.B.

Bombing Iraq is worst, 'cause it won't be a solution to the problem, it'll
just kill people.
Peace
David

letting saddam keep weapons of mass destruction is much worse than bombing
iraq

What is worse you ask.  Well I have seen what Sadam's weapons of mass destruction can do.  I have no doubt that to bomb Iraq is the lesser of two evils.  Both of the options are bad!.  But after seeing for myself what chemical weapons can and have done to people I am left with no other answer.

Peace to all

Let the dam fool play his game.  Remember JFK the best thing we had in
the 60's well somebody didnt think so. They have so many self proclaimed
religious fanatics in the middle east let time pass he'll be history!

Letting Sadam keep the weapons 'cause you never know when he'll get
pissed andlet them off.

Mahn, we need to teach Saddam a lesson-- a lesson in love.  If only he knew love then he wouldn't feel the need to do all this shit. I mean, yeah, we in the US need it as much as ol' Saddam, but my point remains: Saddam needs some good ol' fashioned lovin' not this nuclear proliferation, phalic-driven, gun-crazed, swimmin' in a pool of his own self-admiration, family punishin', friend pushin', pet beating, mother-rapist-father-killer, facist, despotic tyranny of temper tantrum, temperature tippin', tobacco-trippin', heart (field) burnin', lack o' yearnin', feel the pain, hop-a-waggon-gang, get it up the profane, lack o' love in war, playin' cards with no score, singin' but to a whore, land o' local lore, ring-rang-rung around the rosie, could-ya-pass-the-soul-please?, no clean for dirty laundry, questioning of ifs ands ors buts not, selfish controlin' blood clot, make way for new van, join a non-band, whisperin' 'cause abhorin', sing-song incantations, no need to flee when you won't fly, there's never call for shy, love's bright torch feel only cold, gee yer gettin' mighty mold, drink the beer and hop the wine, my mustache makes my divine, I'm beggin' darlin' please, NOW get down off your knees, screemin' screemin' scratchin' clawin', reach for me a wee bit more, what's a tree when it's a chainsaw?, I don't break-- I make the law. LOVE. That's the answer I adore...please, please sir may I have more. Let me tell you++ it'll settle the vanquished score, now only the depths of hearts to explore. That's all, brothers, sisters, cousins, half-mothers..., who's out there now? We need you more. A time for change has left us dry, heavin' on the dust of the McDonald's fry, golden tunnel of green in the sky, join me now in Jubil-eye. Clogs will never, never sigh, popcorn daddy's warm in the nigh'. Talli-ho, and tall-to-teddy, clean and make a comfy Betty, walter comes and walter goes, tali-tali-tali-NO!  Stinki Socks is signing off (rock me, seep into my conscience cup)

I'd say bombing Iraq is worse because inocent people die, If someone got
rid of Saddam only one person would have to die, and hopefully the
problem too would be eliminated.. Unfortunately killing him seems to be
the only way to get rid of  him for good.

Lets hope he tune's in very soon before we have blood shed.

Peace

I think bombing Iraq is the worst. I don't think starting a war with Iraq
will solve anything. If you recall Iraq was at war with Iran thirty years ago.
Besides, I think it's better to resolve issues by talking then by fighting.

Obviously, letting Saddam keep weapons of mass destruction would be the
answer for the question of the week.

well..

the americans have gained what by getting involved in the past?
Anything?

I wouldnt know, i'm from a much more peaceful and much less red-neck run
country called Canada!

certainly not perfect.. but at least I can smoke dank herb whenever I
want.. not to disrespect america but they should butt out and take
lessons from alot of other countries, like switzerland, germany, and
canada!

Bombing this man isn't the answer, heck he would probably be the only one that
lived.
But there is always other ways, less mess......

Sorry take the SADMAN  out  for a long walk.

i think we should just keep the peace. we should let iraq keep
the weapons. it would be better than starting war again.

What a tough question to ask!  There is no easy answer to that, is
there?

Which hippy ideals are most needed today?
Practice acceptance and love for all.  Live life to the fullest!  Open
your mind!  Welcome peace with open arms!  Do NOT bomb Iraq just to show
them they shouldn't fight anymore...  there has to be a better way.
Stop wars!  Nobody wins!  It's just a senseless manifestation of the
government trying to keep our numbers down down down...  Rise up against
injustice.  If you're not part of the solution, you're part of the
problem.  Teach people how to love and be peaceful and eventually
they'll forget how to hurt.  Love who you can and try to understand
those you can't love.  Take CARE of eachother.  Change the world while
nobody's lookin'....or while everyone's lookin'....who are we tryin' to
impress anyway!  :o)  Love!  Hope!  Peace!  Harmony!  Acceptance!
FLOWER POWER!  Roll with it, baby!  Roll with it!

tolerance, i definitely would say tolerance!

I think that the most ideal attitude that a hippy can have is
positivity.  Without that  what chance do we have for a world based on
love happiness and peace??

PEACE & LOVE WORLD WIDE

I feel that one hippy ideal needed today is helping to save the
enviornment.  With all the damage done already, its about time that us
hippies come together and try to save it.

Clearly, the most important value of the Hippy in today's society is
acceptance.  If people could only learn to accept everyone as they are
without passing judgement, it would do away with a lot of our society's
problems.  We would eliminate hate crimes (as there would be no
judgement passed because of race, creed, sexual persuasion, etc), and it
would help towards the goal of peace.  To be open minded enough to
accept people as they are regardless isn't always easy, but it is
possible, and it has to be the most important hippy value.

--The Pseudohippy (a.k.a. The Pied Piper)

We need to luv everyone and everything, stop judging, be kynd, share,
hug people more :-)
We need to learn how to live happily together in a peaceful envirnment.
Nuthin left to do but smile smile smile :-) So, take your brother by the
hand and try to help him understand :-)

The Hippes of today need to be themselves, and make sure they don't get caught
up in the hype.  It's mostly about being a free spirited person, one who takes
care of the envoirnment, is non-judging, and is all natural in spirit.  Yes,
the way you dress and all the acessories that come with do play a role in
being a hippie, but the ideals that are most needed today is just all loving,
loving and more loving.  No violence, and no cruelty.
Peace and Love,
Claudia

Activism. To push things back to more of a middle-of-the-road position.
Many of us now value the lives of foxes and rabbits more than we value
human life.  Well, we protest the killing of animals to make fur coats
but abortion is okay.  Something's clearly wrong with this picture.
It's easier to buy condoms than it is to buy cigarettes in some states,
i.e., in my state you have to show ID until you are 27.  And  you don't
need to show ID to buy condoms. Buy condoms?  Ha. The city health
department occassionally gives 'em away--your tax dollars and mine.  In
this city we now have a law which makes it OK to panhandle and beg on
the streets. . .every Sunday I attend Mass downtown and there's this
make-believe bum outside the church with his hand out.  There are jobs
galore for anyone who wants to work--let him find one of them. We now
have a president who promised us the most ethical administration
ever--and look what's happened!  I could go on and on but I have work to
do. Yeah--I'll get off my butt and get activated myself. I need to
figure out a strategy. . .but meanwhile, I promise to vote for every
legislator who is pro-life, anti-welfare,
pro-take-responsibility-for-yourself. . .and last, but not least,
anti-tax-increases.  The way I see it, the money I earn can either stay
in my pocket or go to the government to implement more social programs
like Hillary's precious day care stuff------and I would rather it stay
in my pocket so that I can buy a newer car (I drive them until they die
and this one is just about had it) and fix my bathroom ceiling.
Activism.

Peace and love--a former hippie who grew up!

HEY !!!
All ideals are important in anytime you are living in - Love, Peace, Freedom, Tolerance, but there ar not only the ideals but also the happiness and also the not ending Path of searching and plus the respect of Mother Nature and the Universe.

And a lot of small things making this world a better place to Live...:)

Of all of the hippy ideals, the ones most needed these days are the
concepts of love for your brothers and sisters, and respect for your mother
Earth.

i think the ideals that are most needed in todays society are those of love,
understandin and tolernce

I think that the ideals that are needed today are trying to be as
good a person that you can be, help your fellow man as best as you
can. Try to be as insightful and you can in dealing with situations,
and in listening to what the other person has to say. Try to be more
layed back as opposed to being uptight and stressed out and just
doing the best that you can in every situation that is presented to
you in life.    Joyce  the Hippy musician     my e mail address is

Do you have to do drugs to be a hippie?
The very idea of "have to" goes against all that hippyness stands for. You don´t have to do drugs to be a hippy. However psychedelic drugs can expand your consciousness which is definitely a hippy thing and unless an individual increases his/her consciousness in other ways, not doing drugs can be seen as being a less experienced hippy. Many people/hippies don´t like drugs and shouldn´t be excluded as a result.  (}i{)  PS: Try it with a good set and setting, it´s worth it. Start with weed and work you way up to shrooms and ultimately acid. Start on low doses and work your way to the level you enjoy the most. ;-)

No, drugs do not constitute being a hippy. If one wishes to take
drugs that is their choice. Being a good person, trying to do good to
ones fellow man, being positive instead of negative, helping to clean
up our environment, helping to preserve our animal population,
developing all those hidden talents that each of us have to a certain
degree but sometimes let go by the wayside, being an individualist,
not being afraid to think a different way just because the Jones's
follow one path, does not mean you cannot follow another. Living to
your fullest potential in whatever way you can, and being as happy a
person as you can. (very important) If you can pass that happiness
along to another human being because happiness can be catching, you
have done a very good deed indeed!!           Peace and Love, Joyce

Hi, my name is Heather and I would definately call myself a hippie...I
have never touched a drug a day in my life.  It's called meditation, the
absolutely pure and natural high.  Being a hippie is all about loving
others as well as yourself.  I do have to say that in order to achieve
the ultimate in meditation experience, you must be a very mentally
strong person and very dedicated to your goal.  Most hippies
result/resulted to drugs because they didn't have the same strength that
I share with the gurus.  Learning more about myself and the world around
me is much more important to me than seeing psychadellic colors...

No you don't have to do drugs to be a hippie.  A lot of us do, but drugs
isn't what it's about.  The hippie is about the way of beliefs, such as
love and peace to solve problems and such like that.
Love,
Patchouli

Hey now...
I'm a 15 year old hippie from southern Pennsylvania.  Up until about a
week ago I was an absolute drug-free hippie.  I had this vision that I
could show all the stereotypical people in this world that I could be a
true hippie and not do drugs.  I have been to one Dead show in my time,
my mom took me when I was 11.  I have seen Yes, Further Fest '97, and I
went to Woodstock 2 in Bethel, NY.  I recycle, spread peace, and I
totally back up the "MEAN PEOPLE SUCK" logo.  Drugs don't 'make' a
hippie.  Being a hippie is about what you believe in, how you treat
people, what you do in life...  Yeah sure, there have been a few hippies
who were (and still are) into drugs: but hey, that's their thing.  As
long as they respect others, and their choices, they're cool.  Hippies
are nonjudgemental.  They give everyone an equal chance.  They're about
peace and love, but not only do they say it; they believe in it.
Hippies care for the earth, for the animals, and for mankind.  Hippies
are about nature.  They long for the simple life; without complications,
without war.  Back to the basics.  People can have these feelings
without the use of drugs, although drug users can have the same as well.
Some drug users 'consider' themselves hippies because they use, and they
like the whole 'drug scene'.  But more than anything, "hippie" is a
state of mind.  It's not the clothes you wear, not the bands you follow,
not the drugs you take.  It's in your soul, and not something you can
truely fake.  Sort of like Halloween, I guess.  You can wear the
costume, and think you look pretty cool in it, you know?  But when you
get home, the mask comes off, and you aren't 'Dracula', or 'Spiderman',
or one of the "Mighty Morphin Power Rangers' any more.  Hippies don't
wear masks.  Hippies are from the heart.
    ...Nothin' left to do... :)
     jfkelley@EROLS.com

Of course ya dont have to do drugs to be a hippie! being a hippie is a
state of mind and being, not dependancy on substances. I do personally
smoke weed, but its certainly not a factor of making me any more or less
a hippie than anyone else!

Peace & Love,
Rainbow Brite aka Spica

I don't think that it is neccessary to do drugs to "be a hippie". Back in
the 60's and 70's, everyone that was a hippie didn't do drugs... but it is
hard to believe that there were and still are a few sober ones. It's just
all the stereotypes. When someone asks you what you think of when you say
the word hippie, most people probably see a scrub in bell-bottoms, some
weird jewelry, and baggy tired eyes, with one hand giving a peace sign and
the other holding some pot or something. Of course though, that is not
always true. Some might see some really happy looking person with the same
description just without the baggy eyes and pot, but instead with a shirt
that says "Don't Do Drugs".

Absolutely not!  I consider myself a hippy and I don't do drugs.  I don't put
people down if they use, but I do feel sorry for those who get in over their
head.  Have a healthy respect for chemicals.  One word of advise - Only do
what what God grows, not what man makes.

I do not think that one has to do drugs, it just helps in some ways.
i find that people are a lot nicer when on drugs.

NO you do not have to do drugs be a hippy..Most hippies dont like drugs
that are not natural like meth and coke are really bad for you.. Idont
do drugs but alot of people think i do cuz i am naturally kooky and like
to dance and have fun!! Alot of my friends smoke kind bud and thats
their choice..
Cleaninggirl@worldnet.net

Definetely not!  In my opinion, you are more of a hippie if you can
reach an altered state of mind or clarity without drugs.  Drugs are
known to lower your energy field, and weaken your "inner senses".  I
thought that being a hippie was all about spirituality, and finding your
inner-self; how can you accomplish this when drugs are changing your
brain-chemistry, moods, and thoughts?  Be the natural, earth-loving,
"in-tune" hippie, and just say no.

To be a hippie is a state of mind One has to remember that we are all
brothers&sisters.  Doing drugs dosen't make anyone a hippie but it sure
makes life a hole lot of fun. Love Peace

you don't have to do drugs to be cool just be yourself to be cool

Heck no you dont have to do drugs to be anyone..
but, if you do psychedelics the right way, in the right environment,
with your awesome smiling friends, at a warm house with brown walls, and
listening to Jerry & Phil, then it could really change you for the
better, open your mind, and give you "revelations."

I personally think that mushrooms are illegal cause the government does
not want people to open their minds that far...

but it's your choice..
:) :) :) :) :) :)

You don't have to do drugs to be a hippy, but it helps!!!!

Benjamin "SpooN" Kisner

You do not have to do drugs to be a hippie. You just have to believe in
peace. You don't really have to dress different and look different to be a
hippie today. You can can look like everyone else and still be a hippie, as
long as you believe in peace. If you want, you can even get your message about
peace out to others. Most hippies do that.

I dont think you nessicarly have to do drug's to be a hippie, Man.
But I think Most might every now and then take a hit of the old bong.
Personally I think all hippies at one time in there life have gotti'n
pretty messed up.

Sincerely the dope king man!

I've never met a hippie that dosent do at least do some form of drug.
            peace,  smyliee:)

NO NO NO ....  Being a hippy is a way of being, a state of mind...what puts
you in that state of mine is irrelevant (I can't spell, sorry)   Unfortunatly
what comes along with alot of hippy culture are drugs.  But being peaceful and
intuned with yourself and the people along with environment is what real
cultures about.  If it circulates around drugs your not a hippy but an addict.
Come to a medium or don't do drugs.  There are some cool cats out there that
don't do them.

No. You don`t have to do drugs to be a hippy. I`m a teen. I don`t do drugs. It`s wrong. Sorry to all you drug adicts.
Peace to y`all.
   Brittany

No, I don't think you have to do drugs to be a hippie. I think the point
of being a hippie was to do drugs...hippies were just (or are) a bunch of
people who were creative, and wanted independance. I always thought of hippies
as the care-free loving people who had points and wanted to be heard so they
traveled across the country in brightly painted buses giving out love beads
and a message of harmony while singing on street corners for spare change and
smiles. I don't think that is nessecarrily a definiton of a hippie, that's
just a stereptype. Hippies are people with those general beliefs and ideals. I
don't think rebeling and breaking the law classifies as being a hippie.

I for one think it is not cool to smoke anything and i am a HIPPY!!! who
ever smokes in the world is part stupid if not all stupid.

Hell no be yourself.  Take no shit or dope  from  nobody.  Peace of mind or dont do it!   Be yourself .

Cicely Lee

First tell me what you mean by drugs......  than I probably would tell you that you have to know/experience in order to say something usefull! So my answer would probably be yes...... But who I'm I ???? Kolja.

you're hippy because you feelit you don't need drugs to be a hippy,
when people listeng the word hippy they think in drugs, but be a hippy is
a lifestyle, a phylosophy the weed is just a habit.

I don't think you need to do drugs to be a hippy.  I think you just need to cherish peace, love, and flower power.  That's what I think.   Peace out!  Jamie Lee

I think personally that you don't (need to drugs), but you must believe
strongly in the hippie idea.

Not all of it,
just Mariuana.

Smoke Them!

and check out my Hippie page

I believe that this question has more to do with other peoples
perspectives instead of our own  If you saw a man driving in a VW van that
had shag carpeting on the walls and peace stickers on the bumper, you would
label him a hippie.  I feel a hippie is anybody that has a free spirit and
enjoys new thrills, and that can include or exclude drugs.

     RLC

HELL NO YOU DON'T!!!!!!!!  I am clean and I am!  While I admit most were, and
I'm cool with that 'cause it's the individual's decision, that has NOTHING to
do with the mental status

What drugs, man?  I'm always this way!

No,  to be a hippy is more of a state of mined.
Deadhead1

if you wanna drop some trip to have a more peaceful life, then drop it,
remember its not really hurtin you. drugs and not doin drugs to bein someone
is bullshit, your someone for some reason or another, drugs are far out of one
side,
love and peace , "no war"
lets try to stop this 90s bullshit violence, peace now, and everywhere for
everything

nope, you just have to believein peaceful life styles, "peace now"

nope, but you you have to have a clear head and definitely be a free
thinker, open to anything that comes your way.

C-ya later,
         Tanya

yes !!!!!

No!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Dude no way.  Have you ever heard of warf rats.  There are pleanty of hipsters
out there who are good kind folks and choose to live their lives sober.

NO!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Well.....I do,but that is not something that is
imporant. There is a certain state of mind I believe in the term
"hippy".......drugs are not needed (although they are enjoyable).

no. Hippiness is about accepting everyone, no matter who they are or
what they do.

Not necessary.

To be in drugs or not to be in drugs is a question of the same free choice of any being in this Universe as the other questions about the wills and future steps of the personality you would ask. (Sounds hard ? :))

I mean only - IT IS ONLY UP TO YOU (to drop in or drop out...)

Woody
(Pilmaier@setto.cz

I don't think that you have to do drugs to be a hippie.  I think that
being a hippie is abou t how you think and not conforming, so why should
hippues have standards to conform to to be considered a hippie?  Doing
drugs definetly adds to the experiance, but you don't have to be a
druggie to be a hippie.

i don't think you have to do drugs to be a hippie.  I don't do drugs and
i am still a hippie.  I think that it just would make it funner if you
do.  A hippie is classified by the clothes he or she wears and the way
he or she acts and also the music.  Drugs are just a big part of most
hippies lives.   thanks!!- peace, love to all-   love dawn

no you can just drink alot

What have hippies done to help the Earth's environment?
True hippies live lightly on the land. They are not consumers, with mad desires for mass  consumption of materials made from non-renewable resources. Hippies would prefer to stay home (contributing to cleaner air) and make stuff. Their own bread, clothes, music, organic gardens, jewelry, fun etc. Rampant consumerism is the #1 destroyer of the Earth's environment.

It's simple. Just look what Greenpeace is doing and you'll have the answer.
Even some of the fighters for nature are really young, I consider them as
brothers and sisters of the hippie-community.
Hippies are the only ones that ever did anything good for the nature.

We are giving those shit-eating capitalists the finger, and saying to
all that we are not letting our (only) home go to hell!

THIS IS A REALLY MASSIVE QUESTION !!

I think to answer this we have to make differences between the hippies of 60´, 70´, 80´ and 90´.

The first generation (lets call them 60´) just estableshed themeselves and were much more fighting the problems of social stuff then looking out to the nature. I do not mean they were not thinking about the Mother Earth, but the "ecology" was not so global term. But they have found out the nature as a Mother, opened out the books of Thoreau and have been reading the voices of beat generation, that was trying to establish the new relationship between people and their Mother.
But ! The hippies of 60´ made a biggest step - they refused the consum.

The next generation - 70´, started to be more active in the ways of nature. And then I think a lot of hippies were not only escaping out from the life as it happened on the beginning of 70´, but have started to care about the nature and it was the reason of founding out the organisations like Greenpeace (I think a lot of hippies of any generation is working in the organization like this is).

The 80´ generation was a little bit none-seen. I do not know what all had happened in the all parts of world, but the support of ecological organistations have been rising and as I think the result of 80´ is a couple of ecological parties here in Europe organized by the old hippies of all kinds.

And the 90´ ? - Who knows, but I have admit, that the respect to Mother Earth and Her Nature is one of the basics of the philosophy of any kind of free-minded person, not only hippies.

Peace and love.

Woody

I think that the "save the earth" and "earth day" themes are one way
that the hippie culture helped in cleaning up our environment. one
example is the recycling of materials and saving our forests and
trees. The amount of paper produced, and paper articles is cut down
considerably "save our forests" so we still have our natural beauty
of the environment with us to a large degree. Our precious animals
are being fought for by the animal activists, the protest over animal
made garments, how imitation furs can be even more beautiful than the
real thing. Also, the vegetarian healthful eating not only is
delicious and nutritious, but also are giving our precious animals
their rightful place here on our earth. The back to basic living, and
preserving as best we can this beautiful earth and its inhabitants
that God gave us really is the only and RIGHTway to go!!!!!

In what ways are younger hippies different from the hippies of the 60's & 70's?

First of all the money we didnt have  $100  sneekers . we  went
barefoot . moccosions. earthshoes. or army surpluss boots.  We
hitchhiked . jumped freight trains, had old vw microbuss or in my case
an old studebaker, Not driveing mom and pops  new lexes or taras with
our own credit cards or charge  accounts.  If  I liped off to my parents
and got slapped  in the face we didnt  contact  the  school counsler or
police to report  child abuse. Some may have runaway most said peace and
love will overcome. We slept out under the stars hikeed into nature,
went skinney dipping when we stunk. Not  drive to the mall in another
town , stay at the holiday inn , and  swim in the pool or jump in the
whirlpool.   We were into art, music, gardens, foxfire books, mother
earth news, the whole earth cataloge, selfsufficency, peace and love.
Not  nintendo, saga, the internet, mtv, vh1, tv with 50 chanels, mc
donalds and taco johns, microwave dinners  steven king,  books  on how
to sue, screw, or  chet on your friends and neighbors. We were orginized
in many ways to stop the war, stop racest kkk groups and george  wallace
spiro agnew ronald raygunns. the abusses of j edger hoover, and of
course our local power mongers and jerks. The hippies of today dont say
shit they dont orginise  they are looking for that 30,000-40,000 job
where they dont have to work and hide in there own space. I"m maybe too
critical but this is what I see in the flowerchilds of the seeds we
sowed.  What the hell went wrong?  Maybe we are  the establishment of
the day I hope there  is still help. Where are the new Joans,
Janacies,Jimmeys, Jerrys, Arlos  and Bobs.  I"m sure someware out there
a new hippie will let the sun shine in.

We had a bond in the 60's.  We were the outcast and it was truly
dangerous in some areas.  Because of this we viewed each other as a
member of the same tribe.  You could hitch hike and other hippies would
pick you up.  If you needed a place to crash, you just found another
freak and you could crash with them.  The brotherhood and sisterhood of
the time was truly beautiful.

It's not the same culture as in the 60's & 70's.

It's not about peace and love and mankind anymore, which is sad.

Scotsman

The difference of the young hippies and the older sorts is in several positions:

1) The possibilities - the hippies of 60´ and 70´ had no imagine about the netsites like Internet and the whole communication possibilities making the hippies and anybody much more closer to each other.

2) Continuing on the position one today world, thanks to the information much quicker information flows all around the world, so today hippies are much more international - there are much more hippies connected on and reported from other countries, than from hippy "capital" state - USA.

3) Today hippies also have the experience and the help of the olders - the hippies in 60´ had no older generation of themselves.

4) And also there are other groups very close to hippies - postpunk and postanrchistical groups, indies etc., that made they own "historical" experience and that also can exchange the knowledgements with hippies.

5) And plus there are a lot of different hippies being a hippies because of a lot of very different causes, that are very individual and that can feel themselves much more free in the world - our world today is a little bit more tolarable to long haired and bearded guys hanging around with their ladies dressed not so conventional and also - the world is much more opened for the discution.

And there are a lot of other small differences ....

Woody
(Victor P. Pilmaier)

Hi brothers, I think that the younger hippies are quite different from
the "original" ones. The actual society is wilder than before, and it is
very hard to be pacifist : people try to hurt you, to do a lot of things
against you. There's not a lot of hippies, and they're less united than
before... So it is, for me, quite a lonely life because I don't know any
hippies, so I can't live in community, as I'd like... But anyway, I
still against conformism, and in one way, it makes me more different
than other "classical" people...

O.K., anyway, make love, not war...

Edouard
Gar@Club-internet.fr

I think alot of the difference lies in the times, the music, whats
going on in the world in general. The musical influence than was one
of love, peace, war, there were strong statements made in the music
(Blowin in the wind) (Fixin' to die rag by country Joe and the fish)
(give peace a chance)the peace and love attitude , the laid back
nature of the hippies I grew up with, the drug culture(which
obviously is still here but  the camraderie of passing around that
joint and groovin' on that music, or sharing a psychedelic trip with
a close friend just doesnt seem to be one in the same these days. I
have kids, and I see and listen to their music, as I am a musician
and am open to playing an singing songs of the 80's, 90's but somehow
its all just not the same. Those times were the best of times, and
the generation we grew up in as hippies is not there to nurture, and
cultivate the same mind set, its just a different feeling, very
different now.......

I am from the generation of the 60's and 70's.

The HIPPIES today are much more of a REAL INTELLECTUAL and
HIGHER TECHNOLOGY.

This is not easy to admit sometimes, but I could not be without
the new generation in my business.  They are invaluable and I
treat them kind because they deserve it.  BIG BUSINESS and BIG
GOVERNMENT have left them often with disappointment.  We adults
must learn to accept a lot of the responsibility for what we leave
for future generations.  WE allowed gangs to grow, etc., etc.

Let's put an end to the jails and prisons and stop leading our
young people to such a HELL on earth.

Isn't it about time we cared and loved them enough to PREVENT THE
ABUSING OF THEMSELF.  HOW ABOUT MORE EDUCATION AND LESS EMPHASIS ON ENFORCEMENT AND PUNISHMENT.  I AM SAD WHEN I KNOW THAT EVEN ONE HUMAN BEING HAS TO BE LOCKED BEHIND BARS.

LETS TAKE CHARGE OF OURSELVES AND GET REAL.

LOVE and PEACE

I think that hippys in the 60's and 70's had a bigger impact on
people.  Now a days people really dont pay much attention to them.  Sure youll see one here or there on the street but its not really a big deal.  Hippies stood for peace and independence.  And I think people needed that at the time because they were looking for encouragement.  I think in the next four years we hippies will come out of our hiding places and show the world a bigger peace and love than ever before.  If we work together we can change the world!!!

Peace 2 all,

I think that the hippies of today are very different from the ones of yesterday.  I live in a town where there are lots of "hippies". The youger ones I have met seem to be very clickish.  They don't want to except you or know you if you don't look like them, eat like them, or dress like them.  I'm not saying that they are awful people or anything.  I just thought that they would be more down to earth and more excepting of others.

Last summer, I went to a lot of festivals and met some very kind "older" hippies. I seem to enjoy the hippies of yesterday more than the ones of today....

Over here  and over there funny things are every where!!!!!!!!!

no more free love

Younger hippies are alot more realistic giving out our vibe and our
ideals within a workable framework.  We are much more a abnormal culture now that is accepted rather than a counter culture which the hippies of the 60's were seen as.  We don't seem to take quite as much lsd either
(ha ha)
           Peace man
ps - we also don't live under the threat of the bomb (thank goodness)

I think that the gen-x hippies are more realistic when it comes to
politics, drugs, and sex.  They have more on their minds than just peace
and free love.  Because when they don't use common sense, they have to
live with the consecuenses.  Unlike the hippies in the 60's-70's, or at
least the stereotypical ones, we actually have morals and plans for our
future, like education.  And most of us use condoms

Today's hippies are very different than the hippies in the 60's and 70's.
Today's hippies are hippies because there parents were hippies. Hippies today are involved in different activites. They have tatoos and they pierce various parts of their body other than their ear, such as their eyebrow, nose, tongue, lip, navel and nipples. Many of them dye their hair various colors. The hippies twenty and thirty years ago didn't do that kind of thing. They were more laid back then.

I THINK THAT ALOT OF THE HIPPY'S OF TODAY R PRETTY MUCH THE SAME , BUT TODAY ALOT OF HIPPY'S GET CRITICIZED AND IT SUCS!
I ONLY WISHED I COULD OF LIVED IN THE 60'S!!
  NO FAIR

Hi ya all lovely people!!

I myself think that we are no different from the people who were born
25-30 years before us.

I like to smoke some pot, hang with my friend, live in a safe, and
social environment.
We should live in communities like hippies used to do.
I am leaving Holland to live in a Kibbutz in Israel.
That's what we all should do. Live together and ban war an violence
out of the world

 MAKE LOVE NOT WAR

I love you all brothers an sisters!!!!!!

Maria

I really don't think there is much difference between younger hippies and
those of the 60's and 70's other than age.  We all have the same goals: peace, love, and freedom.  The way to peace is throug love and toleranace, accepting people for who they are and giving them the freedom to be themselves. I was born in 74 which makes me 24yrs. old in February, but I'm sure there is no difference between myself and someone who was born in the 50's.  Sure, they have experienced more, but, given time, I too will experience many things.
Peace and Love,
Patricia

I THINK THAT THE HIPPYS IN THE 60'S WHERE MORE INTO IT THEN MOST OF THE
HIPPYS NOW.

From my experience, I am kinda known as a young hippie, we are not too much different.  I have many friends in their 40's and 50's who are considered "hippies" in their day, and they say I looked and act just like they did.
There is not much difference in my eyes.  But that is not for me to say, only the older hippies can be the judge of that.

Phishboy

they try to hard to be what has been

i think that a hippy is a hippy - except the clothes have changed a little..
but then again, a hippy is a state of mind - not a stlye.  Ritarogers@aol.com

i think that younger hippies are different from the 60's and 70's hippies
cause 1st of the clothes . we dress much brighter these days and were not
quite into fringe . but i do have to say is that older hippies had much  more
guts then us , we dont quite still have sit-ins and stuff as much as people
used to

    SINCERELY

I think the difference between old hippies and new  hippies is the new ones
have seen more pain more violence and they have a dimented reasoning of inner love

Do you think hippies are still a potent social force?

I guess you COULD label me a new "hippie", however I'm not the type of
person to accept labels or even attempt to fit the mold that a
particular kind of person is supposed to be.  Someone recently informed
me that 'hippy' is really spelled 'hippie' and stands for "highly
inteligent person pursuing intellectual enlightenment."  I'm not sure if
this is the traditional meaning of the word hippy, but if it is I am
able to identify with it, and I'm sure there are thousands of people out
there who fit this description.  Basically, what I'm trying to say is,
yes, we do hold a potent force over the world.  As long as there are
people out there who are aware of the fact that the government
constantly fucks people over, our food and water are chemically tampered
with, and generally the entire world is based on the rule that he who
has the money has the power; total control over our lives is
impossible.  Every person who gets up in the morning and does something
positive for man-kind is a hippie at heart and part of the "potent
social force".
Neil M. Parrish
freshman @ James Madison University in Harrisonburg, VA
parrisnm@jmu.edu

There are a number of us oldsters working in social services in my
locality.  The concern today is not for people as much as it is in
forcing conformity on all at all costs.  We keep working at being peace
lovin' socially conscious people but we're losing the battle!

Initially it ocurred to me that us hippies are not potent in the politcal
realm the way are hippie ancestors were in the 60's and 70's  which i still
believe.

We do have one very potent force among us that rises above the bullshit we see
in the newspaper, on TV, magazines and just about everywhere.

Our strength is peace of mind, friendship, openess.  We have a family bond and
in general are not consumed by worldliness, makin millions, and always putting
on a front to please others.   Our potency is at the spiritual level and
challenges the status Quo.  We are not robots that only do what the world told
us.  We create, innovate, cooperate and inspirate.

So the question is what is socially potent? (to hippies)

Money
Materialism
Pleasin Others
Charity
Selfishness
Scientific
Religious
Being Real
Compassion
Status
Power
Responsibility

That was fun thanks for the mental stimulation.  I'm buzzin.

Would love to see other answers.

Hell Yeah!!
Overall I think that hippys, myself included provide a much need sense of
kindness and giving that kind of guides others along, sometimes without their
knowing it.
I do not look like a hippy, based on how I earn a living, I cannot. I was
raised as a hippy and think like a hippy.  I also contribute much to my
community and am a top employee at a brokerage firm.  I try to spread a sense
of love and goodness amongst not only my co-workers, but anyone I happen to
meet.

I quess it's a matter of what you call a hippy. I grew up in the 60's,
served in the Marines and in Vietnam  in the 60's. I loved the music and
the culture of the 60's (I almost went to Woodstock in 69).  We (at my
age) are significant socio-economic forces in today's society and have a
major impact on the present.  With all this, I give a big yes to the
question. SEMPER FI AND OOHRAH.

I'm sorry to say, but I don't believe we hippies have any such power in
this day and time! Nobody really took my predessesors seriously and they
are too caught up on wars and the destruction of our earth to listen to
anything we have to say. The sad thing is, we will be the ones to pay for
their mistakes! (as well as our children and so on.) If people would open
their minds and hearts, this world could be a wonderful place to live!
Maybe when the end comes they will finally realize we were only trying to
help and enlighten!!!!!

                                                  PEACE,
                                           Tasha Gaye Legereit

Hi brothers! I think that the hippies are not a social force.
I'm french, and in France, when you look like a Hippy, people only see
you as something strange or kitsch but they never hear you seriously.
My parents call me sometimes : "The Beatnick" or "The may 68 guy" (may
1968 was a moment when all the students were contesting authority, to see
this period a simply way : And it works, it fashioned the modern french
society). So they don't take your comments seriously, only as an
anecdote.

The second point is that there's just a few hippies in France, and as in
a lot of countries, minorities can't explain what they want and get
changes.

no, because we aren't as united as we used to be.

No Sonny Bono is dead!

I definitely think that hippies are still a potent social force.  Maybe not as
big as in the 60's, but look at the following bands like phish, widespread,
moe. etc. have.  I love it.  Cheeba on down.

Keep on keepin' on,
Shayna

We do not need to be a social force, we need to be ourselves.

more so than most people know

I think hippies are still very potent in society. They may not look like
they did in the 60's. But they are still around.

I think that being a Hippie is more about a state of mind than anything
else. Yes, Hippie's usually dress differently than other people, but
they have a different way of thinking, and I think it's GREAT!!!

Long live thie Hippies!! :)

Beth Hoffman

in some ways, but most "hippies" are more of a force than the real, original
hippies.

yes, bring em back

I would like to ask instead:

DO YOU THINK THE HIPPIES EVER WERE THE FORCE ?

(Asking this sounds strange - force is something very close to the words like forces, armies etc...)

And about the social part - maybe some of the hippies are not social (istic) but just a little while capital (istic).

Do not mind it.

I think there are still several hippies left, so that do not ask how many, as because when you release this someone will start to ask how much...

Which hippie do you admire most and why?

My parents are definately my most admired hippies.  They've taught me to live
in peace with myself, to love all and to understand all that could be
understood.  Without my parents, I may never have turned out to be the
wonderful hippie that I am.  They've showed me the way!
Yasmin

There is no question, in my mind, that the history of the Sixties and
everything that has followed (and the many benefits of the knowledge
gained from the explorations of during that time which we enjoy today),
is a direct result of Timothy Leary's evangelism in favor of expanded
consciousness. Tim was fearless and joyful in fulfilling his mission for
the benefit of us all. I would nominate him for hippy sainthood at the
drop of a blotter!

I really argued  with myself over this question as John Lennon is definetely
a hippie to the nth degree, but Abbie Hoffman won the arguement.  Abbie
Hoffman always stood up for what he believed in and never feared the
consequences.  He was imprisoned for your right to display the American flag
on articles of clothing, fought valiantly for the right to smoke a joint, and
was persecuted by the same government that claims that we are free to do the
things he was fighting for.
Although he lost many of his battles in his fight for freedom, he never gave
up.  He was truly a Hippie and if he were alive today he would be sorely
disappointed that there are still laws preventing us from being free.  We need
more Abbies, and when we get some maybe we will be able to smoke for peace and
fulfill his dreams.

The hippy I admire most is Jim Morrison

                 Mike Withouse

Jerry Garcia:  He never lost the sprit.

John Lennon rulz,he's the best hippie in all the damn history.

Hi! For me, John Sebastian is one of the best real hippies because when
you hear him in the Woodstock movie, you only can believe in what he
told everybody. In the Isle of Wight Festival, there was a lot of
troubles with the Police and the people who made this festival, but he
was still peaceful and told everybody to be like him!
In his songs, "I had a dream last night", we see one more time that he
really believe in what he practice.
In one way, we could think that the Eagles's Peaceful Easy Feeling is
the perfect way to qualify John Sebastian.

John LENNON ( remember "Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds")

dude, jerry was the man. he kept on truckin' his whole life. he gave hippies somewhere to go, a  place to party. he was an openminded, loving, gifted man. screw all the controversy and lies, jerry was, and always will be the most rightous hippie to ever grace the place we call earth! ;0)

What is the most important issue facing hippies today?

The most imporatnt issue that hippies face today is strictly an
opinion, therefore, the most important issue will differ from each
individual to another. For me, being a young hippie, the most important
issue is gettting people to open up their minds towards others. Especially
people from different cultures and those with different beliefs. I have a
hard time getting people to understand that I'm not a hippie because of my
attire. I'm a hippie because of my understandings towards life and other
issues. I am known as the outcast hippie in my family circle. They all make
fun of how I dress and how I someday want to live, telling me that I should
decide what I want to be when I grow up because me plans now aren't very
good. I just laugh with them knowing that someday I'll fullfill my dreams
and everyone will fill guilty for not supporting me in my goals in life.I
mean, can't people just accept that I just want to be me when I grow up?!
No more and no less. Does everything have to be planned out?! In my
opinion, thats what makes life boring. I'm spontaneous and I hope I never
change my ways. For the past couple of years I've always look up to
hippies. I've always respected their ways, which is more than I can say for
most people, and it wasn't really untill last August that I actually
started to pick up on the traits. Now I'm the happiest I've been in years. I
take time out for inner peace each day and am now familiar with myself .
I'm happy with myself and my life.
There is that issue that I am facing (along with many others) about
the way people percieve me. I am also known as the school hippie at
Oskaloosa Jr. High. My fellow students, teachers, counselors, and
principals know me as Crystal the hippie. But I think it's solely based on
the ways in which I dress. I am also known for my singing because me and
one of my good friends, Phil (quiet, red haired guitarist) played in the
school talent show and everybody recognizes us as Crystal & Phil the
eccentric duo. When every I'm having a conversation with someone and they
make reference to Phil, they say" ...your guitarist friend Phil." The same
happens with Phil when I am mentioned. Getting back to my main point, I am
known as the school hippie by many but I don't think they understand why
they lable me in this way.
So, in conclusion, my main conflict is getting people to listen and
try to percieve the way in which I do. If they are going to lable me a
hippie, I want to understand why they do. How to deal with it, I'm not
entirely sure, but so far I just show tolerance and preach little pieces of
my believes here and there and treat all people with the same respect. I
just silently laugh at how ignorant some people can. I would never laugh
out loud at these people though because I know it's not their fault that
they're uneducated and unexperienced. I just hope that someday I will be
able to give them my knowledge.
Those are my thoughts. I would love to hear what others have to say.
Either about my issues or any other problems they face. Feel free to e-mail
me at sherman@lisco.net.                             Peace & love
always---Crystal

We (my Ole Man and I) agree that the most important issuse for today's hippies is that we, as a people are slowly losing our rights to exist as freely as the Constitution describes. This country was founded by a whole bunch of hippies. Outcasts, they were, because they couldn't live any place where too many laws, or too much government restriction would hold them down from their persuit of happiness. There are laws, now, to prevent the outspoken voice of the general citizens. "Standby silence, when one should protest makes cowards of men", quotes Abe Lincoln (another bearded-longhair). George Washington wanted nothing to do  with a form of government where there was a chance of "big business" taking control. Thomas Jefferson was mainly concerned with the balance of power. He wanted assurance that the people would be guarenteed certain rights, which would never be taken  away by the government. Hence, the Bill Of Rights have been trampled on, year after year, little by little, all in the name of protecting the citizens.

Why are we trapped in a dimension of idiotic, murderous, slave-trading,
talking apes !?!  Is spirituality the answer or just a brain (chemical)
induced defence  ? Will i eventually have a secret lover that loves
oral sex as much as i do? Will i ever again have a friend like
the one i just lost to depressive suicide? Is it possible to be aware
and happy?                      I WISH I KNEW !!!!!!!!!!!!
love & peace,                                       thor ('67')

i think the most important issue facing hippies today is the right to possess
marijuana.  while our brothers and sisters are being raped and murdered, the
government wastes its time and money on the peaceful folk.  what kind of
system is that?!

Old Age

The health and preservation of the life and soul of our planet.

the most important question to answer at our time of life is, WHAT THE
HECK HAPPENED?

The most important issue facing the hippies of the 90's is whether we are the
last of a dying breed!  With today's young confused kids, it's scary to think
that there will be no one left who knows how to party in a peaceful manner.
I'm a teacher and love to be told that I'm a "90's HIPPY CHICK" but don't want
it to be confused with these teens who take to violence and others blame it on
their drug use.  I'm a young hippy but I still follow all of the old hippy
ways which to me are...party in peace and love those you choose to party with
(32 yrs. old).

LET'S NOT LET THE HIPPY GENERATION DIE,  LET'S CONNECT , PARTY IN PEACE , AND LEAD THIS MIXED UP WORLD INTO THE YEAR 2000 WITH A NEW IMPROVED ATTITUDE....'"
ALL WE NEED IS LOVE!!!!!" .

                                                 Peace , my fellow hippies,
